Linguistic Geography in the Nart Epos

Notes:

1. The original Western Circassian toponyms are shown with their current English equivalents.
2. The Kuban was referred to as Pschiz by the Western Circassians and by Psizch (Great River) by the Kabardians.
3. 'wzezchw ('wzev in Kabardian; literally: narrow mouth) refers to the narrow bay northeast of the Sea of Azov (also Azov Sea).
4. The Black Sea was named Xi Schwts' by the Western Circassians and Xi F'its'e by the Kabardians. Both names are equivalent and literally mean Black Sea.
5. Xi-T'uale Teymen is the Straits of Kertch.
6. Xi Miut'e is the Sea of Azov.
7. Teymenich'e literally means the tail of Kertch. The Kertch peninsula is just across the Straits of Kertch on the Crimean side.
8. Teyne is the Don River.
9. Yindil is the Volga.
10. The word Gwbgh in Western Circassian or Gwbghe in Kabardian means plain(s).
