Mix-a-Lot: Visionary
an essay in
appreciation
Sir-Mix-Alot
(SMA)emerged in the early nineties under the light of a great gimmick never
before explored in the world of radio-friendly rap music. His songs were
simple and explicit appreciations of the female ass. SMA passed quickly
through the top 40 with his hit "Rumpshaker", which ironically served as
counter to the dirge laden "grunge" also emmenating from his hometown of
Seattle at the time. Little did we know that time would again tell the
real story, and that in the end it would be SMA's inspired songwriting
that would leave the timeless mark on the world of music.
His songs always opened fast and hard, cutting to the chase that his
narrator was so preoccupied with:
Kick it, lick it, watch where I stick it
Face down while I punch your ticket
Punching the ticket is one of many artful and wordy expressions SMA
used
to voice his desire to penetrate the anus with his penis. At the time,
moderate feminists were quick to jump on his case, saying that "face down"
was degrading. When SMA later explained that it was actually the highest
art of the admission, feminists started siding with his "alternative" thinking.
That thinking set groundwork for a common understanding amongst the masses
that all forms of sexual expressiveness, even if violent, were complimentry
because sex in itself was an art, and people and things being described
within it are tortured and dynamic. SMA convinced the public that from
actions and words stem understanding. The public decided context wasn't
necessary and let him drop the next fat rhyme.
Ride my king cobra 'round the world
Wanna do ya girl
Want ya pettin' my big black cat
Blackberry jam don't shake like that
His vision so singularly obsessed with pentetrating the anus showed
a rarely-parelelled devotion to the art he earlier explained. A fountain
of creativity, SMA was always up to the challenge of naming acts, equipments
and players. King Cobra, Black Cat, Zuchini all managed to communicate
a sense of pride. He spoke to people who felt shamed for their real inclinations.
Mix-Alot was quoted in the July 95 issue of option
"Its all like writing a book, only the characters aren't neccessarily
people. Instead of using greed to describe a person, i'm using it to describe
a verb. Or in some cases, i'll use, you know, metaphors. People think they
come easily but communicating how bad the narrator wants the ass isn't
something that just happens," said SMA.
"It needs to be particular to that bitch," he continues, "or else people
can't feel it the same without the real vibe."
SMA
penned songs that were not relegated to one strict level. His creativity
and imagination not only belnded mood, but often prescribed unthinkables.
His narrator gave off confidence like spare change for the needy.
If your booty's extra-large, I'll bring the
funk
Wanna see some extra luggage in the trunk.
The songs were about structure as well. Something completely new. He
was never hesitant to bring his vocabulary down for a playful accessibilty.
Witness:
Who's afraid of my big bad weenie
Rub it and see if it's got a genie
Gonna make disappear this 10-inch zucchini
Just like Houdini
But where was this lasting impression? Well, the groundbreaking has
been done, and no one has yet to realize the magnitude of it all. SMA was
the first artist to be able to write within a specific topic consistently
while still managing to speak symbolic measures of the world. Song after
song was written... ass ass ass. People realized it wasn't a gimmick and
lost interest. Rather telling that appreciation wanes when they realize
the force is permanent.
Wanna see yo' butt cheeks flappin'
Mix want the honeys with the big back doors
See, the narrator is rapping as much about anal sex as he is about dreaming.
Flapping butt cheeks are what we all dream about. Not specifically. But
for the narrator, asses hold the key, and the key is infinitely glorious
is is is being waved from the unthinkable flapping butt. You as a professor
dream of the TA who doesn't ask questions. In this confessional by SMA,
he admits to what he wants and further commits to chasing that down. By
the time the song is over, the narrator sounds like a driven man, set on
getting what he wants. The motivation is there, and only time is in the
way.
He declares:
So drop them drawers, whores. Unh.
Sir Mix Alot was recently dropped from the American Records label. He
may be gone but the lasting impression of his single world, seperate levels
and his dedications and exploration within will hold themselves as references
for all futures. Unh.

end of the peel...
