This is just an introduction to Temiskaming and the many treasures that await the visitor. Perhaps you'll come visit sometime.
A tremendous view from above the west shore of Lake Temiskaming near Bucke
Park Campground on the edge of the Town of Haileybury. Quebec
can be seen on the other side to the southeast. There is plenty of fishing
year round.
In the early days of settlement in the area, logging was naturally done
by men and horses. This practice is still carried on today by some smaller
local operators and is gaining acceptance as a practical method of
timbering that allows harvesters to be less intrusive and destructive. Many
parcels of forest that contain reasonable values of timber that would otherwise
be passed over by the larger companies can be logged economically. One local
operator from north of New Liskeard
offers training and business opportunities to a new generation of foresters.
These logs may be used to build Cabins for visitors to stay in.
The mining industry has been quiet for many years since the boom days of
the early 1900's and the rush for silver near Cobalt. Many old headframes have
been left behind as tourist attractions to remind us of those prosperous
times and the heroic efforts of our forefathers as they struggled to build
a nation in it's infancy. Visitors can tour historic sites around Cobalt
on a self guided tour.
Many old mine shafts are still visible today to anyone who ventures
into the woods. Many old mine dumps are targets of souvenir hunting Rockhounds
and mining enthusiasts. Plenty of treasures can be found.
If one should venture into the woods near cobalt it is said that you can
hear the sounds of the past on the wind. The picks and hammers as the clanged
against the rock and a raucous laughter of the miners and prospectors as
they cheered over their good fortune and their discoveries.
Times and fortunes do change and mineral exploration and processing have returned to the area. New hope is returned to the Cobalt Mining Camp and the surrounding area as new potential and discoveries are being made today. The district of Temiskaming is now the site of renewed exploration for diamonds, platinum, palladium, gold and typically; silver, cobalt and base metals such as copper, nickel and zinc to name a few.
Winter drilling programs, ground geophysical work, sampling and a variety
of other techniques are being employed to develop the local mineral potential.
Seen here is a skidder dragging a drill into the bush. Local prospectors
and companies are joined by public companies to develop the precious ground.
These companies provide the resources necessary to develop the discoveries
made by prospectors.
Seen here is a backhoe, trenching on a property in Lorrain Township. Most
exploration is carried on in places that are generally inaccessible to machines
and most people for that matter.
When the day is over and the work and play are finished it is time to relax
and take in the view of Latour Lake. The tour isn't over yet; it is only beginning.
Come back from time to time as the year goes on and
we will show you more of what goes on About Temiskaming.
