Three-week intensive international master-course, using texts of Shakespeare, based on the methods of Stanislavski, Meyerhold and Grotowski.

Immerse yourself for three weeks, six days a week, for three three-hour classes each day, in the study of the actor's and director's craft, through the most beautiful and efficient dramatic literature ever written. We accept applications from well-trained actors and directors seeking to achieve a new plateau in their professional work. We require full time participation. No late arrivals or early departures.

The application process is highly competitive. Deadlines are strictly kept.

The workshop's language: English.

Esztergom is a picturesque city in Northern Hungary, at the bend of the Danube river. This thousand-year old royal city is filled with historic monuments, art and architecture that should provide inspiration in itself. Less than an hour away from Budapest, one of the theater capitals of Europe.

1. Actors chose a role from Shakespeare that you would like to play. Give a short analysis of the role and your reasons for choosing it specifically for yourself. (1-2 pages)
2. Directors chose a Shakespeare play that you would like to direct. Give a brief idea of your concept, as well as your reasons why you think it should be staged. (1-2 pages)

We propose an intensive, three week Master Class using texts of Shakespeare, and the methods of Stanislavski, Meyerhold and Grotowski.

The workshop offers a submersion into the world of the Bard as well as into the nature of acting and directing using the best available written material. It is open to both actors and directors.

The workshop will last for three six-day weeks with three, 3 hour sessions each day in picturesque Esztergom, the former royal city of Hungary at the bend of the Danube. All students are expected to participate fully, from beginning to end.

Intensive, general training - getting acquainted, creating a common language and building a group

Morning Sessions:

Physical exercises explore and train the body as an instrument; sensory and group exercises, nonverbal improvisations and games deal with body language, sensory perception, reflex-reactions and the role spatial organization in social and personal relations as well as other elements and principles of the primary (non-verbal) communication system.

Afternoon Sessions:

Turning the tables. Detailed text analysis will reveal the "clues" in the text that describe characters, situations and necessary actions through the dialogue. It gives an important tool to both actors and directors to unravel the content and to open their minds to different interpretations.

Evening Sessions

Scene-study work combines the results of the Morning and Afternoon Sessions. The students explore how the verbal clues in the text translate into nonverbal action, how their knowledge of body language and space can help them determine the blocking for a scene or understand and utilize a blocking given to them by a director; how to set up a situation that will express social and personal relations, conflicts and changing alliances even before the first word is uttered.

Creativity gone wild - developing material

Morning Session

Physical exercises deal with specific problems brought up in rehearsals and special classes teach useful skills for the performing of the material at hand (stage combat, acrobatics, mime, masks etc.).

Afternoon Sessions

break down to rehearsal groups led by actors or student directors exploring material that was chosen by them or the instructor. Armed with their knowledge of analysis as well as the tools of expression, the students are encouraged to find their own unique interpretation and to develop the most effective way to express it.

Evening Sessions

The work is presented to the entire group, evaluated and critiqued on their success in achieving the goals they set out to reach. The scenes then may be returned to the group for further development or other material is assigned.

FINALS

Putting on the show

The actors' work is not complete without meeting an unbiased audience. Using the best of the material, the students and the instructor will create a Final Presentation for a wide, non-professional audience. This will provide an opportunity to work under pressure, develop professional communication skills and combine all the skills already acquired. Last, but not least, their craft will be evaluated by the ultimate judge - a live audience.

Endre Hules has worked as an actor, director, writer and teacher for the past two decades in Europe, America and Japan. He completed the five year conservatory program of the Hungarian Academy of Theatre and Film Arts in directing, trained at Grotowski's Laboratory Theatre and at the International School of Theatrical Anthropology, as well as with directors Peter Brook, Peter Stein and Juri Ljubimov. He was also a Producing Fellow of the American Film Institute.

Mr. Hules directed Shakespeare and other classics, as well as contemporary and experimental productions and musicals at the National Theaters in Hungary, the Biennale de Paris, La Mama New York, the Los Angeles Theater Center, the Williamstown Theatre Festival, the Shakespeare World Congress and the Los Angeles Theater Center among many others. Presently he is in preproduction to his film Demons, based on the novel of Dostoevski.

His acting credits include many great classical roles as well as such films as Apollo 13, Seven, The Peacemaker, Dances with Wolves, The Craft and numerous television appearances. Next he'll star in Masterpiece Theater's The Song of the Lark with Maximillian Schell.

He is the author of seven plays and eight screenplays as well as articles and essays on theatre and theater education.

He has taught on the faculty of such institutions as the New York University (Experimental Theater Wing), the University of Southern California (Filmic Writing Program), Smith College, Bard College, Espace Acteur (Paris) and gave intensive workshops and Master Classes in Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Massachusetts, Washington D.C., Toronto, Tokyo and Kyoto.

He is recipient of the Screen Actors Guild Award for his work as an actor and the Grand Prize of the international design competition, Theater of the Future.

His workshops, similar in nature to the one proposed, resulted in the productions of Mischief in the Woods (Williamstown Theater Festival), The Chekhov Party (Williamstown Theater Festival), Sleeptalk (New York City), The Whole Town is Theater (Szeged, Hungary) and others.
