First things first however. Cable needed to identify each and every one of Stryfe's new strike force. Determine their exact powers and develop counter-measures for each.
Slowly Cable and the Professor (The living sentient energy life-form that had once been X-Factors ship. Which had bonded with Nathan as a babe to save his life. And which now had joined itself with/into Graymalkin's main-frame)
gathered the names and abilities of this new group which Stryfe had named The Mutant Liberation Front
Cable was going to need some massive high firepower assault troops and he was going to have to recruite them from the twentieth century. But from where?
Before Cable could dwell overlong on this subject Professor interrupted his chain of thought with more disturbing news. "Nathan, I have just found new records indicating that Stryfe is seeking still more recruits for his Mutant Liberation Front."
"Oath!!" Cable exclaimed as he slammed down his favorite
coffee mug. "He changes history with every hour that passes. Who's he after now?"
"Little more then children, Nathan, a teenage boy and girl known as Rusty Collins and Sally "Skids" Blevins. I vaguely remember them from the time I spent serving as a home to your father and the rest of X-Factor known to them only as "Ship" at that time. The historical records indicate everything to be just as I recall up to the mention of the pairs so-called escape from Federal Custody aided by the terrorist group known as The Mutant Liberation Front."
"Acess full library memory," Cable ordered already moving toward's the armory. "Search: Any reported sightings of The Mutant Liberation Front, the day before this alledged escape."
"Nathan, there is more information you will need before.."
"No time" Cable cut in tersely "Have Hank, Bobby and..."
This time it is the Professor who cuts in sharply with "Nathan this information is in regards to the special research you had me to do and is imperative to your mission and may make you wish to change the date of your insertion into the past."
Cable stopped cold and slowly returned to his seat, before the display moniter. "Professor" he said in what was, for Cable at least, a very hushed tone of voice "What's new on the research front?"
"Quite a bit, since we last communicated on this subject, Nathan."
Cable's voice was now barely above a whisper. "Do you have a new Awakening to report?"
"Possibly" Professor replied as an image of a slim blonde young man appeared on the screen. "Samuel Guthrie. Born: Cumberland, Kentucky, United States of America."
"Do I know him?" Cable asked.
"Not yet, but you will soon."
"Do you know him?"
"You know my memory programming is faulty in regards to personel recollections." Professor answered.
"Yeah...Mine too, huh?" Cable interjects.
"A part of you was but a child, Nathan. And I was a projected energy matrix. We are fortunate we survived at all." Professor told him.
"I know... I know. Tell me more about this kid."
"What little I have, Nathan. Samuel Guthrie was recruited by Charles Xavier..."
"He was an X-Man?" Cable asked.
"Reports are contradictory. He served as a student of Xavier's, but no records indicate he served with the X-Men"
"What makes you think this farmboy is a High-Lord" Cable asked.
Official documents place Samuel Guthrie's presence well into the twenty-forth century" Professor replied.
"Interesting. You're sure about this one, Professor?"
"Of course not, Nathan, I can never predict with a complete degree of accuracy. I can only extrapolate possibilities from what little established records I can access."
Cable pulled his legs up and crossed them in the chair and steepled his fingers in front of his face, with eyes closed in silent thought for several seconds.
Professor took this time to electronically summon Jean, Scott and Hank (Three servo-droids that maintained this safehouse in the fortieth century. Cable has several of these servo-droids on Graymalkin and at the majority of his safehouses, in the twentieth and fortieth centuries, and all seem to be named after the original X-Men) to bring Cable suitable weaponry and accoutrements for his jaunt. The three droids hovered silently awaiting their masters pleasure.
Cable rose suddenly from his contemplative position. "Fine then, if a boy would be King--then a boy needs to learn how to be a Man first!"
"And you are to be that teacher, Nathan?" Professor asked as the droids dressed their master for war.
"It's the opportunity we've been waiting for--looking for--for a long, long time!" Cable replied.
[your military accoutrements are prepared, sir] said the Hank/droid.
"Much obliged Hank. Professor Timeslide me--before Guthries awakening--give me six months to a year in advance." Cable ordered.
"Processing...On-Line. Be advised, Nathan, that in this time period, you have made several enemies." Professor warned.
"Just the way I like it." Cable said as the time portal opened before him.
"And the mutant population is on the verge of civil war." Professor admonished.
"And someone has to win that war, Right? It might as well be Me--and the Boy-High-Lord. Wish me luck, Professor. It's time for Sam Guthrie to wake up!!" were Cable's last words as he stepped through the time portal that Professor had opened using Graymalkin's time displacement core.
"G'Journey" whispered Professor as he prepared to beam his essence back to Graymalkins main frame two thousand years in the past. To silently wait and be ready to do whatever he could in case Cable needed him.
Cable had about two weeks jump on the Mutant Liberation Front and he meant to put them to good use. He had the Professor give him everything he had on these New Mutants.
They numbered six at present, not counting Rusty Collins and Skids Blevins who were in Federal Custody at the moment. What was so strange was that even with all the mutant tracking gear available to him on Graymalkin, the Professor couldn't find a trace of either the New Mutants or X-Factor (Which at this time consisted of the five original X-Men: Cyclops, Jean Grey, the Beast, Archangel, and Iceman) which probably meant that they were off-planet. Not an entirely uncommen occurance in this line of business.
Cable did his research nonetheless. The six current members were a diverse lot to be sure, but that had always been the way for all who wear the "X" hadn't it? They were:
