Cable had prepared well for the Clan Chosen's assault on the Tinex. He had stolen a Sewage Treatment Transport so as to approach with little notice. Cable had made a few alterations to the transport, however, to make their job easier once they arrived.
The transport was cleared for landing and as Boak set it down near the entrance Cable flipped a switch which caused a thermite grenade to be ejected. A split-second after the explosion Cable exited the transport, guns blazing, immediately followed by Garrison Kane, Tetherblood, his sister-in-law Hope, Dawnsilk, the bio-organic synthetic being Boak and the wavelength displacement unit numbered Eleven.
As Cable and the others continued their assault upon the guards, Boak and Eleven went to the entrance of the Tinex.
"You sure they can break through the system?" Kane asks.
"The keypad lock hasn't been built which Boak and Eleven can't crack. Just cover their backs, Garrison." Cable replies.
"By all means, please do, Nathan." Boak adds, "Accessed. Eleven, please..."
Eleven turns to the now exposed keypad lock and taps in codes quicker than the human eye can follow and within seconds the huge entrance opens.
"I guess I should be eating crow right about now." Kane says.
"I don't understand." Tetherblood says.
"The joke is in the timing. Forget about it." Cable tells him, as the group enters the Tinex and Cable closes the entrance and blasts the lock while Tetherblood and the others fuse the entrance shut with lasers.
"Well, that was pretty easy." Kane says.
"Don't get cocky, Kane." Cable tells him.
"We should have simply thermed this entire facility. Filled a cargo ship with multiple warheads and crashed it on remote. Risking our lives like this is ridiculous. But a callous disregard for your Brethren has always been your style, has it not, Dayspring?" Hope asks, as the group enters the elevator and Tetherblood pushes the down button.
"Nice to see that even in two thousand years, in-laws still won't get along." Kane says, hoping to lighten the mood.
The ride down is silent and as the doors open the group is greeted by several dozen armored guards along with two Flatliners.
Meanwhile, in Washington at the Canaanite Commission on Strategic Maneuvers. General Haight breifs the Commission.
"You believe yourselves capable of withstanding an attack on the Tinex then, General Haight?" A lady at the head of the table asks.
"As I said, Ms. Blue, we are prepared for just such a contingency. Indeed, we anticipate it." Haight replies.
"My memory's a bit foggy, General, but isn't that what you said before, when Cable's Clan destroyed the original Tinex?" Ms. Blue asks.
"That was then, this is now, Ms. Blue. Everything is in order." Haight replies.
"What makes you so certain our schedule is primed, General?" A gentleman asks.
"We have access to an unwitting ally, Mr. Calm." Haight replies, as he activates a projector and an image of Garrison Kane is put up for them to see. "This man, Garrison Kane. He is a time-hole. An anomaly. A refugee brought here by Cable from the late twentieth century. He will want to return home. Combine that desire with Dayspring's pre-existing psyche-profile regarding chronal-jumping and we are guaranteed an internal assault, as opposed to an external one."
"How will this affect our agenda regarding Sinsear?" Another gentleman asks.
"That will continue apace, Mr. Lake. Tyler Dayspring will be eliminated for having defied his programming. Then Sinsear will proceed with the original chronal objective that Tyler was assigned, ensuring the cross-timeline High Lord Ascension of our oh-so-beloved En-Sabah Nur, Apocalypse." Haight told them.
"And you have no fear that the Clan Chosen incursion will upset these plans?" Mr. Calm asks.
"No, Mr. Calm, I sincerely doubt that will happen. Even should they succeed, which I do not expect they will, our agenda proceeds quite nicely, already. I sincerely doubt anything can now stop the chain of events we have set into motion. I doubt that will happen at all." Haight tells them with a knowing smile.
Back at the Tinex.
"So, do we give up, or what?" Kane asks.
"Go Flong Y'Self!" Dawnsilk says, as she opens fire on the guards.
"That was brilliant, Dawnsilk. Boak--Screen Us!" Cable orders.
"As you wish, Nathan." Boak replies, as he raises an absorption field around the group just as the guards open up on them.
"Oh, Nathan, they are emitting just a tad more juice than my systems can handle. I recommend we find a way to make them stop before I get severe indigestion." Boak tells him.
"Understood. Eleven--Impulse Sizzle--Static fry all surrounding systems." Cable orders.
"But that will temporarily disable our weaponry as well." Hope protests.
"I'm aware of that, Hope, but we still have an ace up our sleeve." Cable tells her.
"That means me, doesn't it?" Boak asks, with a sigh.
Eleven emits the impulse sizzle, as Boak drops his absorption field, and all the guards armor and weaponry shorts out, but the two Flatliners, with better shielding are mostly unaffected.
"Nate, D' Fladdlinerz sdill sdandin'" Dawnsilk tells him.
"I see them, Dawnie. Boak, the Flatliners weren't affected by the E-M scramble. Are you ready to download yet?" Cable asks.
"Now, Dayspring, you know it will take me longer than this..." Boak begins.
"We don't have the time, or the firepower, to hold off everyone here, Boak. We have to act fast. If that means releasing your energy absorption before it's digested, then exactly what choice do we have?" Cable tells him.
"You mean what choice do I have, don't you? All I can say is that it just had better not take you as long to reconfigure me as it did last time." Boak says, as he prepares to release all the energy he has stored.
"Boak, No--Don't Do It!" Hope yells.
The Flatliners were blasted apart, as was Boak by the energy feedback.
"Boak!" Hope screams.
"Hope, I'm sorry. It was the only way. With our weapons down and the Flatliners left between us and the central time core, what else could we have done?" Cable asks, as he reaches out to put his hand on Hope's shoulder.
"Shut up, you FLONG!" Hope screams, hitting Nathan with a right-cross which breaks his heart more that anything else.
"Hope...he was...he is...a bio-organic construct, created to serve us. He's not really human." Cable tells her.
"He was more human, more of a man, than you've ever been." Hope tells him bitterly, as she turns and enters the control room for the time core.
"T-Blood, Dawnie stay out here--Guard the time core perimeter in case any re-enforcements show up. Also...uhm...gather Boak's pieces up, too. So we can reconfigure him, later." Cable orders, as he and Kane follow Hope into the time core control room.
Kane keeps unusually silent during all of this and thinks to himself, "He just sucks it up and goes right back to business. All his hard choices, All his anger is buried deep inside. Where he prays it won't show. Except it does, at least to me, in the haunted, exhausted look in his eyes. How much pain and misery can even he hold in? Does he have anyone to turn to, to confide in? How does he do it?" Kane wonders.
"How much time?" Cable asks Hope.
"To blow up the tinex? Slide a Therm under my seat and put it on a three minn timer. To properly scan the myriad timelines that the Tinex can access, find the one which Kane belongs in, flare up the timemat and call up a backslide program...give me a klik-point-five." Hope tells him.
"So you can get this thing started? The Tinex is fully operational?" Cable asks.
"Not only is it online, but it's already been used." Hope tells him.
Today, outside Juttenberg, Austria. Sinsear in an overcoat and wide-brim hat approaches a castle's entrance and knocks on the huge double doors.
"Hello, may I help you?" The man who answers the door asks.
"I would like to speak with the one who is called Tolliver." Sinsear tells him.
"Oh, my. I must apologize, Sir. Uhm...Mr. Tolliver has been uhm...deceased...for several weeks now." The man answers.
"No. You are either ignorant or lying." Sinsear says, as he extends a blade from his arm and impales the man on it. "Tolliver is still alive. You are not." Sinsear steps over the man's body to search the castle for himself.
Two thousand years after tomorrow, at the Tinex.
"Hope, we're cutting this a little close." Cable tells her.
"I'm the Chrono-Physician here, Nathan. Would you like to trade places and have a few billion temporal possibilities flush through your ret-scans all at once?" Hope asks him.
"Thanks, but I've been there. More than once." Cable replies.
"Wait, I've located the right chrono-line, but I can't seem to isolate the reception signal. The Professor should be on a continual scan for crosstime signals, shouldn't he?" Hope asks.
"Greymalkin was purposely designed as an orbital base in order to make timejumps easier. Keep scanning for it. I have to talk to T-Blood." Cable tells her, as he turns and walks back out towards where Tetherblood and Dawnsilk are standing guard.
Unknown to Cable, Greymalkin has been invaded by S.H.I.E.L.D. in an attempt to take it over when a Shuttle accident revealed it's location. Sam Guthrie and X-Force were able to stop this take-over attempt, but during the battle many of Greymalkin's systems were severely damaged and many systems, including the time core had to be jettisoned. Greymalkin's time core now lies at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.
As Cable leaves the room, the Tinex's computer screen reads,
WARNING: TIME DISPLACEMENT COORDINATES INACCURATE. CENTRAL CORE HAS BEEN DISPLACED FROM PREVIOUS COORDINATES. PRESENT COORDINATES REGISTER HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS FOR DISPLACEMENT RE-ENTRY. RETRY; ABORT; CONTINUE?
"T-Blood, Dawnie, I think we're almost ready. Plant three Threms around the core, then Body-Slide out of here." Cable orders.
"Wait, whad 'bout you, Nate?" Dawnsilk asks.
"I'm going back in time with Kane." Cable tells them.
"No, Nate." Dawnsilk begins to cry.
"Why?" Tetherblood asks, "If the boy has ascended as you say, then he no longer needs your protection and if Stryfe, The Chaos Bringer, has been eradicated from the temporal stream as you claim, then why go back?"
"Because someone else has taken a jump. I don't know who and I don't know why, but after what happened with Stryfe, I can't let anyone run around loose during such a critical juncture in the timeline again." Cable tells them.
"Scanned. We fight for the Dream in your absence, Dayspring, until such time when you return to fight with us." Tetherblood tells him.
"In my own way, T-Blood, I'll be fighting for the Dream as well." Cable tells him, as he shakes his hand. He then turns to Dawnsilk and hugs the girl, who he loves as a sister, warmly and turns to walk back into the control room.
"Hope, if everything is online, lets fire up the Tinex and slice us some time."
"Ready when you are, Kahuna." Kane tells him.
"You knew I decided to come with you?" Cable asks.
"Let's just say, I knew you wouldn't let the Canaanites send someone back without the business end of your plasma gun pointed at his or her face." Kane tells him.
"I have to go, Garrison, but you can stay if you want. In many ways, you fit in more here than you do in your own time." Cable tells him.
"Nate, I still want to try and help Hammer walk again. Besides which, if there's any way I can help prevent this fimeline from ever happening...prevent all this pain, all this fighting, all this oppression...how can I choose not to go back?" Kane says.
"Let's do it then. Hope, fire it up." Cable orders.
With a glow building to a final flash of light...Cable and Kane are gone.
"That's it. He's gone. Again." Hope says, as Tetherblood and Dawnsilk enter. "Let's plant the Therms and 'Slide out of here."
"R'dee." Dawnsilk says, as she plants the last Therm.
"Voice-Link--Body-Slide by Five--Uhm...By Four and A Half." Tetherblood says, as he looks down at the pieces of Boak.
As they appear in the transport, Dawnsilk takes the controls and lifts off, while Hope takes the co-pilot seat.
"Airborne." Hope tells Tetherblood.
"Therms online, Hope?" Tetherblood asks.
"Ready to pop, T" Hope replies with her finger on the button.
"Do it." Tetherblood orders.
The Tinex explodes with all the fury of an atomic bomb taking Niagara Falls with it.
"Erase one Time Displacement Center. It will take years for the Canaanites to build another one." Tetherblood says.
"Gone. Goodbye. Jus' like Nate." Dawnsilk says, still crying as she has since Nathan informed her that he was leaving again.
"He'll be back, Dawnie. Dayspring always finds a way to come back. After all, we can bend, but we don't break. Nothing that anyone has thrown at us has broken our Clan unity, or our resolve in each other, or our love for one another and nothing ever will. Right, Hope?" Tetherblood asks.
"Right." Hope replies, as a tear rolls from her eye at Tetherblood's words and she wonders if she has indeed killed the Chosen One. The others wonder at her sudden sadness, but think it better not to ask.
Today, at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Two men suddenly appear. Cable knows something is wrong as soon as they appear, for it is pitch black.
"What a ride! Are we back? Turn a light on, will you?" Kane says.
"Something's wrong. Professor...Why aren't you online? Professor?" Cable calls out, but the only answer he recieves from the darkness is total silence.
"Nate, what happened?" Kane asks.
"Beats me." Cable replies.
"Great. Good answer. That clears up everything. What a walking fountain of information you are." Kane says.
"We are inside the displacement core, Garrison. I don't know why we're not linked up to Greymalkin's mainframe or why the powers down, but I know where we are. Now relax and let me take care of things." Cable tells him, as he looks out of a viewport and sees that they are underwater. He then walks over to a console and takes something from his belt and and begins to make some adjustments to the console.
"That's like the Dentist saying, 'Don't worry, this isn't going to hurt a bit.' It's amazing what my life has turned into. After my parents died and I hooked up with Hammer and G.W. Bridge, I never thought this would end being what I did. Then I thought, this is cool, big guns, babes and world travel. What sixteen year old could resist, right? I mean, I've had a chance to try almost every brand of beer in the world, not bad at all, except for that Indochinese dog-brewed one in Tibet. And I wouldn't trade most of it in for anything. Just weird to look back on it and think I have so little to show for it. Uhm...Are you trying to find us a way out of here, by any chance?" Kane, finally, asks.
"Even better than that, a secret compartment filled with the necessities of life." Cable says, as he goes to a storage unit and takes out two six-packs of beer and throws one to Kane.
"In cans? It's only good when it's cold. I hate it warm. You always did like those stouts, too, warm and thick as shoe leather." Kane says, as he pops the top of one of the cans.
"The life I've lived, Kane, you learn to like food less for the taste and more for the survival." Cable tells him.
"Speaking of which, while I was stuck in the future waiting for you, I did a lettle research on your life. Care to answer a few questions I have?" Kane asks, as he kills the beer and pops open his second can.
"You're drinking too quickly." Cable tells him.
"I know. I hate being in tight, dark places." Kane tells him.
"Claustrophobic, Garrison? I didn't know that." Cable says.
"Yep. Problem only seemed to develop after you blew me up in the Yucatan and I was trapped in the rubble with both my arms and legs a few feet out of reach for six hours." Kane tells him.
"I thought I was forgiven for that one." Cable says.
"Keep working at it." Kane replies."So, we're going to play twenty questions, right? Well, get ready for the biggie right off the bat. How come you never told us Stryfe was your twin brother?"
"Stryfe was not my twin. He's more like a reflection in a broken mirror." Cable tells him.
"Poetic. How about the truth?" Kane asks.
"I honestly don't know, for certain. When Stryfe and I fought on the moon, before we were both sucked into the time stream, I started to figure things out. Stryfe is me, or I'm him. A pale version of him. After all my telekinetic abilities don't compare to his. I'm half metal and he barely has a scar. I've always been told differently, but I'm beginning to wonder if it's possible that He's the original and I'm just the clone." Cable tells him, as he pops his second beer.
"You're a what? I mean, what does that make you? Why were you cloned from him? Why were you separeted and never told?" Kane asks.
"We lived two different lives. I grew up with a family of sorts, the Dayspring Unit. After they disappeared, I soon took up with The Askani' and then The Clan Chosen, fighting against the Canaanite dictatorship. Stryfe was raised by En-Sabah Nur, Apocalypse. I don't know how we came to be seperated or why, but I do know why he came back to this time. Because my parents...his parents, or both our parents, I guess live in the here and now and Stryfe wanted to see them dead. Stryfe tried to kill Scott Summers and Jean Grey and failed, but by Askani's tortured Soul, he came close." Cable told him.
"Nice lives we've had, huh? You lost y'r childhood, y'r parents, y'r wife, y'r son, then y' lost a war. Come t' think of it, y' even lost y'r past an' y'r future, too. An' it all jus' slides right off you, doesn't it? Like the energizer rabbit, Nathan Dayspring Askani'Son, failed savior of the future, keeps on goin' an' goin' an' goin'...right?" Kane asks, as he finishes his sixth beer.
"Right. Just like that." Cable replies, crushing his can, perhaps just a little too forcefully.
"How do you do it? Why haven't you given up yet?" Kane asks.
"If I give up, that means they win. If they win then everything I've fought for, everyone who's lost their lives, none of it matters. I'll die before that happens." Cable picks up his plasma rifle and gets up. "C'mon, it's almost time."
"Time f'r what?" Kane asks getting unsteadily to his feet.
"Time for us to go." Cable says, as he goes back to the console and powers it up. "And before you ask, we were out of power. When I got the refreshment, I tapped the spare power packs I keep for my plasma weapons into the core. It just took a while for the station to drain enough energy from them. They're made to drain slow." Cable explained.
"Very sneaky. An' here I was, thinkin' I was gonna suffocate." Kane says.
"The Professor's not online. That means he had to abandon a huge portion of Greymalkin's mainframe, which means the time displacement core was jettisoned off Greymalkin, which means we're on Earth on the ocean floor. Even though I can't contact Professor, we can still Body-Slide within planetary boundaries. I've set a course for my Swiss safehouse." Cable tells him.
"Oooh, my favorite." Kane replies.
"Relax, Garrison. You'll be toasty warm in a second." Cable tells him as he activates the teleporter.
As the pair appear in Cable's Swiss Chalet, they are greeted by the sight of G.W. Bridge standing in the kitchen, pouring the last of a pot of coffee.
"Oh, isn't this a pleasant surprise. Comfortable?" Cable asks.
"Uhm...hi, Guys...uhm...want some coffee?" G.W. asks.
"You're all out, G.W." Cable replies, raising his gun to cover G.W.
"I'll make more." G.W. says meekly.
"After all the garbage you put me and my kids through, G.W. give me one good reason why I shouldn't Blow your THICK-AS-A-BRICK HEAD OFF!!" Cable yells.
"Because, I can tell you where X-Force is." G.W. answers calmly.
"Do not, I repeat, Do Not play games with me G.W.!" Cable tells him.
"Sure, Cable, no problem, since you've always been so straight with me, how could I think of jerking you around!" G.W. replies.
"What kind of a hypocrite are you, G.W.? Joining S.H.I.E.L.D. after the Six Pack broke up and hunting me down like a dog, after the things I've done for you." Cable tells him.
"What did you do for me, Nate? You never treated me like an equal, like a friend." G.W. says.
"I had my reasons, G.W. You wouldn't have understood then, you're so thick you wouldn't even understand now." Cable replies.
"Coffee's done, Guys." Kane says, as he pours himself a cup of the fresh coffee he's just made. "Let's see if I remember, now. Nate, black, no sugar. Bridge, cream and three sugars, right?"
"Uhm...right." Cable tells him.
"But all he's got is non-dairy creamer." G.W. says.
"Truce?" Kane asks.
"Conditions?" G.W. asks.
"You tell Nate everything you know about X-Force and he makes good on the promise he make me to help our ol' Six Pack Buddy, Hammer, walk again." Kane tells him.
"Deal." G.W. says.
"Agreed." Cable tells them.
An hour later, the trio is still talking. Cable is in the bathroom shaving and sipping from his coffee cup, while G.W. explains what has happened in Cable's absence.
"So the Shuttle accidently tripped the wavelength your space station operated on. It scrambled all it's systems, decloaked it. I went up with a S.H.I.E.L.D. Unit. We confronted your X-Force twerps, Nate. They played pretty rough, too." G.W. tells them.
"So then what happened?" Kane asks.
"Well...they kind of kicked our butts around...then the entire space station started to fall apart, then Greymalkin exploded." G.W. tells them.
"Really?" Kane asks, a huge smile forming at the thought of Nate's reaction to this news.
"What did you say, G.W.?" Cable asks, washing his face.
"HE SAID GREYMALKIN BLEW UP." Kane yells, making sure Nate hears him loud and clear.
"WHAT?" Cable's yell shakes every window in the chalet. "That's not possible."
"But it happened, Nate. Gone." G.W. tells him, "But not before Samuel Guthrie, acting as leader of your little Brat-Pack, was able to jettison major portions of Greymalkin for his own Earth-Side use."
"No. That's not right." Cable says, as he walks over to a communications panel and activates it. "Computer: Bypass Professor voice-identification. Location Search: Greymalkin."
GREYMALKIN: NOT FOUND
An hour late, G.W. has led them to the Apache Reservation in Camp Verde, Arizona, where X-Force has set up their new headquarters. As the trio near the entrance, they hear voices and throw on their spot lights as they raise their weapons. There, standing revealed in the bright light is Domino, Grizzly and Vanessa Carslyle.
"Dom, Griz, glad to see you were all able to make it. Looks like the two of you still haven't learned the art of stealth." Cable tells them with a smile of greeting.
"Nathan, YOU'RE ALIVE!!" Vanessa yells, as she runs to Nathan and throws herself on him wrapping him in her arms and showering him with kisses.
"Umm...ummm...not to sound ungratful...but have we ever met?" Nathan manages to ask through the girls kisses.
"I...I was Domino..." Vanessa tells him with a tremble of fear in her suddenly small voice.
"Domino?" Cable has never, before this moment, seen Vanessa in her true form. "I never knew you werent' her...I mean you knew what she knew...our link..." Nathan looks towards Dom who has daggers, and worse in her eyes. "Dom...I mean she knew me the way you do...I mean the way I wanted you to..." Nathan was digging himself deeper by the second and Dom's eyes were letting him know it, in no uncertain terms.
"Can't say it's great to see you again, Nate...but it is great to see you squirming like this! BWAAHAHAHAHAHA!!!" Grizzly laughed to see Nathan so totally flustered for the first time in his life.
Vanessa, however, saw nothing funny in seeing her life and the first real love of her life, so totally destroying her. Her very soul she had laid bare to this man who had stolen her heart, during the most wonderful year of her life. "But Nate...you and I had..."
"We had nothing!" Cable said, as he turned away from the broken hearted girl. "Let's head over to your transport so we can tell Hammer the good news."
Dom took a moment to enjoy the pain that the woman who had stolen a year of her life was suffering. "Less than you deserve, Witch!" Dom told her before turning and following Nathan and the others.
"Oh, Ham...look who we found." Kane hollered, as they neared the transport where Hammer waited.
Inside the transport, Hammer actived the weapons system and acquired his target and fired a blast which knocked Cable back, even through his telekinetic shield. Hammer then shout out a specially prepared cable which attached itself to Cable and started dragging him towards the transport.
"Hammer, STOP!" Grizzly yelled.
"They're magnetic clamp downs...electrified..." Cable managed to get out, between the shocks.
"I've waited two years for this, Nate! How does it feel to be left immobile? Helpless, unable to control your own body? I'm going to leave you like you left me, Nate...Dead, from the neck down!!" Hammer told him through the transport's intercom.
"Cable knows what he did to you--To us--Was wrong! But he didn't have a choice, Man! He found something--He brought something back from the future--Something that could help you walk again!!" Kane screams.
This gets through to Hammer and he releases Cable from the clamps and allows Cable and Kane to enter the transport. Cable shows him the diagrams of the bionics that would enable him to walk once again.
"No." Hammer says.
"What do you mean, no?" Kane asks.
"Just what I said, Gar, no. I cant use this." Hammer tells them.
"The technology is sound, Hammer. It's a internal mechanical spinal column with a cybernetic mesh interface for your neural to nervous system functions. Why don't you think it'll work?" Kane asks.
"Oh, I'm sure it'll work just fine, Gar. I just refuse to use it. Refuse to turn myself into a machine." Hammer says.
"Why not? It's helped me walk. After what happened in Can-Cun, I was in as bas of shape as you. And look at me know." Kane tells him.
"I'd rather stay in this chair for the rest of my life than become what you have...a mirror image of Him!!" Hammer yells, pointing towards Cable.
Nathan turns and walks back outside, where the others are searching for Vanessa.
"No sign of her anywhere. She got away while you and Hammer were dancing." G.W. tells him.
"Then we have to go after her now! Even though she got us hooked up with Nate again, she still has a Lot to answer for." Dom says, looking Nathan squarely in the eyes. Making it very plain that Vanessa wasn't the only one who had a lot to answer for.
"Are we all together again?" Grizzly asks.
"I don't know, Griz. I have to stay here. Wait for X-Force to return. Talk with them. And anyway, can all of us work together again after what we've gone through?" Nathan asks.
"If you promise to come clean with us. And stay clean. Total truth. No secret agendas. No personal missions." G.W. tells him.
Nathan drops his head and tells them the full truth, for what may well be the first time. "I don't know if I can do that, G.W."
"Then we can work together, but we can't work with you." G.W. says and turns away to enter the transport.
Dom, still looking betrayed when she looks his way, turns and follows G.W. without a word to Nathan. Kane start to enter the transport, then stops short and turns to Nathan, "Nate...I..."
"Garrison, you can stay here." Nathan says, hopefully.
"...No, I can't...I'm not a kid anymore...I'm not your kid...Do for X-Force what you tried to do for me, Nate. Do right by them." Kane says and enters the transport, shutting the door behind him.
They leave. No one says anything. No tears. No regrets.
That's the lie they all tell themselves, anyway.
Nathan stands there, as the transport lifts off. kicking up wind which whips through desert sand. Maybe some of it gets in his eyes. Maybe some of it gets in all their eyes, but that wouldn't cause these men and a very special woman to shed tears. Not from the dust, anyway.
No not from the dust, at all.
