COMPLICATIONS By: Lauren Taylor and Amy Bitter "Get your hands off of me!" B'Elanna screamed, and bit Harry on the cheek. He raised his hand to the wound, and wiped away the blood, staring at her in shock. "B'Elanna, what is wrong with you?" he questioned. "Nothing is wrong! You and Neelix just stay here, I'll get the galacite myself!" she snapped, and stomped off. Harry started to run after her, but stopped, realizing Neelix was still there. ******************************************************** "B'Elanna, stop this. Now, just give me the gun." he told her calmly, although there was nothing that could calm her right now. Well, there was one thing, but he wasn't about to do that. Not to his best friend's girlfriend. B'Elanna dropped the gun, and sat down on a rock, trying to collect her thoughts. She looked up at Harry, who had sat on a rock on the other side of the cave. She jumped up, and grabbed him, holding him close. She began kissing him, and he backed away. "B'Elanna, I'm not going to let you do this. You're dating my best friend. I can't let you do this." he told her. "Oh, but you wish you could! Face it, Harry! Ever since Tom and I started dating, you've been jealous of him! I know how you feel about me, just admit it, and go with this!" she told him, walking around him, looking like a cat on the prowl. "You're right, B'Elanna. I have been a bit jealous. But I still can't let you do this. You'll hate yourself, and hate me if you do." ******************************************************** What had he done? When he and B'Elanna got out of those caves, communication with the ship had been blocked. They were trapped down there. And B'Elanna would die if he didn't "help" her. So, he had to. It turned out that Vorik had blocked communication, so that he could get to B'Elanna, but was stopped before he transported down. ****************************************************** B'Elanna sat in her quarters, trying to collect her thoughts. She didn't even hardly remember what had happened down there, but she sure did know what had happened. How was Tom going to take all of this? "Come in." she called out. "B'Elanna, how are you doing?" Tom asked. "Better. Did someone tell you what happened?" she asked, afraid that Harry might have talked to Tom. "Not really. All I know is that you were sick. What exactly *did* happen?" he asked. ****************************************************** Tom walked briskly through the corridors of Voyager. The adrenaline pumped through his veins as he stormed into the Mess Hall. Tom spotted Harry sitting alone at a table and quickly rushed over to him. “Some best friend you are, you backstabbing jerk!” Tom yelled at Harry with a wrath that possessed his whole body. “Tom?” Harry asked. He knew that B’Elanna had told Tom about the away mission. About the caves, about his feelings towards her, about what he had to do to help her. “Don’t play dumb!” Tom shouted, “B’Elanna told me everything.” “Tom, we should go somewhere else and talk about this.” Harry suggested as he nervously stood up. All eyes in the crowded Mess Hall were focused on the two of them. No one in the crew had ever seen the two of them fight, they were best friends. They were almost inseparable until Tom and B’Elanna started dating. “I say we talk about it right here.” Tom yelled. “Tom, I’m sorry.” Harry tried hopelessly to apologize to man who had been his friend since the very beginning of this mission. “You’re sorry?!” Tom shouted. “Harry, ‘sorry’ doesn’t change the fact that you slept with my girlfriend!” People in the room began to whisper and nod knowingly to one another. All the rumors that had been floating around about the away mission had just been confirmed. “You’re right, it doesn’t change anything.” Harry said. “And, I don’t expect you to forgive me.” “You’re damn right I’m not going to forgive you!” Tom shouted as he pulled back one arm and swung at Harry. Tom’s fist hit Harry’s mouth and cause him to stumble a little. “Tom!” B’Elanna shouted as she entered the Mess Hall just in time to witness the punch. “What are you doing?!” She questioned the both of them “B’Elanna, I...” Harry started. “Shut up!” She screamed. “Just shut up, both of you. And leave me the hell alone!” She angrily stomped out of the Mess Hall the tears welling in her eyes. They weren’t tears of pain, but of anger and confusion. Tom looked over at Harry who was rubbing his sore jaw. For a moment he felt guilty for hitting him. But, that was the way he was, the way he had always been. When someone hurts you, hurt them right back. Tom turned and silently left the Mess Hall. ************************************************************ Two weeks later, none of the former friends were speaking to each other. B'Elanna and Harry weren't really fighting, they just felt uncomfortable around each other. But Harry and Tom hadn't spoken to each other since that day in the mess hall, and neither had Tom and B'Elanna. The three of them hadn't been themselves since that fight. Tom always seemed angry, and a bit distracted. Harry was quiet, and kept to himself most of the time, and B'Elanna would yell at anyone that even came near her. They all stayed in their quarters unless they were on duty. But, this time, B'Elanna had to leave her quarters. "You're pregnant, B'Elanna." Kes told her. "Oh, god." B'Elanna said under her breath. Kes gave her a sympathetic look, she knew about the fight. Hell, everyone on the ship knew about the fight. There were rumors flying around about Tom wanting to kill himself, and rumors about Harry and B'Elanna planning to get together. Kes knew that none of that was true, she knew them too well, and knew that none of them would do that. Tom knew that killing himself wasn't the answer, and Harry and B'Elanna didn't have the kind of relationship that they would start dating. "Do you want me to tell anyone?" Kes asked. "No. No, I should do that." she said. **************************************************************** B'Elanna waited in front of the turbolift, fighting back the tears. How would she tell Harry this? She had to, somehow. After all, it was his baby. And Tom? The turbolift doors opened, and revealed the one passenger occupying it. Tom. She stepped in, without looking at him, and ordered the turbolift to deck three. Tom stood in silence, not looking at B'Elanna. He couldn't help but notice that she looked like she was about to cry, though. It was all he could do to resist the urge to put his arm around her, and ask her what was wrong, and if he could do anything to help. "Tom?" B'Elanna spoke up. He looked at her surprised, almost as if to see if she really had said something, and he hadn't just imagined it. "What is it?" he asked, a bit concerned. "I'm not exactly sure how to tell you this. I know you, Harry and I haven't been on the best of terms lately, and this is really hard to say, especially now, with the way things are. I just got back from sickbay. I'm pregnant." she said, the tears streaming down her face. ************************************************************ *Why didn’t you say anything?* Tom questioned himself. He paced his quarters going over the whole conversation with B’Elanna in his head again. He should have said more than just “Oh...”. He wanted to reached out and put his arm around her to comfort her, he hated to see her cry. But, the turbolift door opened and he stepped out before the conversation could continue. *That backstabber* Tom thought about his ex-best friend. He should be the one having children with B’Elanna, not Harry. Tom had planned on asking B’Elanna to marry him the day of the away mission when he went to her quarters to check on her. As far as he was concerned, Harry had ruined it all. No matter how much Captain Janeway tried to tell him that it was no one’s fault, Tom couldn’t help but blame Harry. ************************************************************* B’Elanna stood in front of Harry’s quarters. She took a deep breath and pressed the door chime. *It’s now or never* She told herself. “Come in.” She heard Harry’s voice call. She entered the room and saw Harry sitting on the couch. He stood in surprise when he saw her since they hadn’t spoken since the incident. “I...um, ..we need to talk.” B’Elanna finally got out. Harry sat back down on the couch and motioned to B’Elanna to come join him. She sat down on the couch, making sure not to get to close. “What’s wrong?” Harry asked as he saw tears begin to flow down B’Elanna’s cheeks. “Harry, I’m pregnant.” B’Elanna said bluntly. “Oh, god.” Harry said as he buried his head in his hands. “I just found out earlier today.” “Who else knows?” Harry asked, “I mean, did you tell Tom?” “Yeah, I told him. He didn’t say anything. Harry, I ruined everything with Tom.” B’Elanna said as she wiped the tears from her eyes. “No, you didn’t, B’Elanna. I did.” Harry said. “Beside, fighting over who’s fault it is, isn’t going to help the situation.” B’Elanna stood and began to walk towards the door. “I’m going to back to my quarters.” “B’Elanna, I’m worried about you.” Harry said, “You shouldn’t be alone right now. Why don’t we go get some dinner.” “Fine.” B’Elanna gave in. She really didn’t want to be alone, and she was hungry. *********************************************************** Harry and B’Elanna received some odd looks and people began to whisper when they entered the Mess Hall. “Maybe this isn’t such a good idea.” B’Elanna quietly said to Harry as they had a seat at an empty table. Tom walked into the Mess Hall. He saw Harry and B’Elanna sitting together and tried hard not to run over at hit Harry again. B’Elanna noticed Tom and there eyes met. After a few seconds, Tom turned and left the room. Seeing Harry and B’Elanna was just too painful, especially now. “Harry, I’ll be right back. I need to talk to someone.” B’Elanna stood and began to follow Tom out of the room. “Tom.” He heard a voice from behind him call his name. He turned around to see B’Elanna standing in the corridor. "B'Elanna, I'm not in the mood to talk right now." he told her as he walked away. "Well, I am. Tom, this is crazy." she told him. "What's crazy? You and I not talking to each other? Or you and Harry seeming pretty cozy in that little corner table? Don't try to deny it, B'Elanna, I saw everything. How do you think all of this makes me feel? I'm the one who's lost my girlfriend and my best friend all in the same day. Then, I have to hear that you're having his baby? And now, only a few minutes after hearing that, I come into the mess hall to see the two of you having dinner together?" he told her, standing only a few inches in front of her face. "Tom, how do you think all of this is affecting me? I'm the one who comes into the mess hall to see you getting in a fight with Harry because he saved my life. And, now, I've completely lost you. You're not the same Tom Paris I was in love with two weeks ago. You're nothing but an over-obsessive pig!" she exclaimed as she stormed away. Once she'd turned the corner, she stopped and leaned against a wall, crying. She'd wanted to make up with Tom, not make things worse. Why was all of this happening? ************************************************************ I guess I must be wishing On someone else's star Seems like someone else keeps getting What I'm wishing for Why can't I be as lucky as those other people are I guess I must be wishing On someone else's star "Someone Else's Star" Bryan White ************************************************************ “You’re baby is getting big, Lieutenant.” The Doctor said as he scanned B’Elanna’s swollen stomach. “Your baby is almost four pounds now.” He said, “Voyager should have a new crew member in about three months.” “Thanks, Doctor.” She said as she slowly got off of the biobed and headed for the door. She reached the door just as Harry entered Sickbay. “You’re late, Star Fleet.” She said. “I’m sorry.” Harry said. He was supposed to meet her in Sickbay so he could hear the baby’s heartbeat. “Hey, don’t apologize.” She said. “It was your idea.” B’Elanna was fine with going to her doctor appointments alone, but Harry insisted on going with her most of the time. “I’ll be there next time.” Harry promised as the two of them walked through the corridors towards B’Elanna’s quarters. B’Elanna noticed a smile starting to form on Harry’s face. “What’s so funny?” She asked. “I was just thinking about how strange it’s going to be for this kid. Being raised by parents who are best friends.” “It doesn’t matter.” B’Elanna said. “As long as this baby has two parents who love it. It’s very important to me that my baby has two parents. That’s something I never had.” “I’ll help you anyway that I can.” Harry said. “I know you will.” B’Elanna smiled. A part of her couldn’t help but wish that this was Tom’s baby. She still loved him so much. She hated the fact that they barely spoke and when they did, they fought. It was the same way with Harry and Tom. They hardly said three words to each other since she announced she was pregnant. At least there hadn’t been anymore fist fights since the one six months ago in the Mess Hall. “I’ve been thinking, B’Elanna.” Harry said. “About what?” “Maybe you should move in with me.” Harry said. “You’re very close to your due date, and after the baby comes, you’re going to need lots of help.” “No, Harry. I’ve been too much of a burden to you already.” B’Elanna said. “This isn’t a burden, B’Elanna. This is my responsibility, too.” “Fine, I’ll start packing.” B’Elanna agreed. “Janeway to Kim.” Harry’s commbadge sounded. “Kim here.” He said pressing his commbadge. “Harry, I need to see you in my ready room.” The Captain said. “I’m on my way.” Harry said. “I’ll help you move your stuff later.” Harry told B’Elanna as he walked away. ******************************************************* Harry entered the Captain’s ready room and found Tom sitting in one of the chair’s across from her desk. “Harry, have a seat.” Janeway said. “I need to talk to the two of you.” Harry sat down in the other chair in front of the Captain’s desk without looking at Tom. “I need the two of you to go on an away mission for me. We’re in orbit above a planet that seems to be uninhabited. I need you to beam down and check it out.” Captain Janeway said. Tom moved like he was going to say something. “Is there something wrong, Lieutenant?” Janeway asked him. “No ma’am.” Tom answered. “Good, you’ll leave in an hour. Dismissed.” The two men stood and left her ready room. *That should give them time to talk* Janeway thought. She hated seeing the two of them fighting. They had been friends for so long. And what was worse than that, was the situation between Tom and B’Elanna. It took so long for them to finally admit they were in love, and now they barely spoke. ******************************************************* Tom and Harry materialized down on the jungle like planet. Tom began scanning with his tricorder and started to walk away. “Where are you going?” Harry asked walking to catch up with Tom. “We’re supposed to check out this planet.” Tom said. “I know that. I just think we should stay together.” “I guess so.” Tom said and started to walk again. The two men walked for a few minutes scanning as the went. “Did you hear that?” Harry asked suddenly turning around. “Hear what?” Tom asked. “Nothing. Never mind.” Harry said. “I thought I heard something, but the tricorder isn’t picking up anything unusual.” The trees began to rustle. “I heard it again.” Harry said as he turned around and came face to face with a humanoid alien. “Uh..Tom.” Harry said nervously. “What?” He asked as he turned around to see the aliens. There were now surrounded by them. “What are you doing here?” One of the aliens asked. “We were just scanning your planet. We didn’t know anyone lived here or we would have asked to beam down first.” “You are trespassing.” The alien said. “I’m sorry. We’ll leave.” Harry said. “No!” The alien said and signaled to the others. The other aliens took the tricorders and phasers from Tom and Harry. “You will pay for trespassing.” The alien said as Harry and Tom were grabbed and lead off into the jungle. ****************************************************** Tom awoke to find himself in some sort of holding cell, much like the brig on Voyager. He sat up, and rubbed his eyes. Harry was laying down on a bench in the cell, still not awake. God, why did he have to get trapped here with *him*. It was bad enough that, right before the away mission, he heard from the ship's rumor mill that Harry and B'Elanna were planning on moving in together, now he had to be trapped in this little room with him. Two men walked into the room, and began whispering to each other. Tom watched them, seeing if he could tell anything they were saying, but it was impossible. One of the men walked over to the cell, and pressed a button on a panel just outside of it. A forcefield blinked off, and the man walked in. Tom stood up, waiting to see what the man would do. The man walked over to Harry, slapped him to get him awake, and then grabbed his arm and dragged him away. ************************************************************ After what seemed like hours, one of the aliens brought Harry back. He'd been injured, it looked like someone had beaten him up. When one of the guards came to toss Harry back in the holding cell, Tom stood up. "What did you do to him?!" Tom yelled. "He wouldn't cooperate with us, so we had to punish him." the guard said, with a grimace on his face. He dropped Harry on the ground, and Harry moaned when he hit the floor. The guard put the forcefield back up, and walked away laughing. Tom walked over to Harry, and sat down beside him. Now that he was closer, he saw what bad shape Harry was in. He was bleeding from a large gash on his leg, there was a huge bruise on his forehead, his arm looked to be broken, and he had cuts and scrapes everywhere. Harry was fighting to take a breath, but wasn't too successful "Tom." Harry gasped. "What is it?" Tom answered, full of concern. He couldn't let Harry die here. Not with the way things were between them. "Take care of B'Elanna and the baby for me." he whispered. "Harry, you're not going to die." Tom told him sternly. "Yes, I am, Tom. Just promise me that you and B'Elanna will make up." he ordered him, still gasping for air. "Harry, I'm sorry for the way things have been these past few months. I was just jealous that all of this was happening with you and B'Elanna. I didn't even think that what you did on that away mission saved her life. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry." Tom whispered over and over, the tears beginning to stream down his face. "I'm sorry, too." Harry managed to say with his last breath. *********************************************************** “Report.” Captain Janeway ordered as she walked on to the bridge. “Still no word from the away team.” Lieutenant Tuvok replied. “Maybe we should send another team down after them.” Chakotay suggested. “No.” Janeway said. “I’m not going to do that until I find out what happened to them.” “Captain, we’re being hailed.” Tuvok said. “On screen.” She said as she turned to face the view screen. A humanoid alien appeared on the screen. “I am Kol of the planet Titan.” The alien introduced himself. “I am Captain Kathryn Janeway of the Federation star ship, Voyager.” Janeway replied. “Why have you trespassed onto our planet?” Kol demanded. “We didn’t know it was inhabited.” The Captain said. “Where are my crew members?” “They are being detained for questioning in our prison.” Kol said. “I order you to return my crew.” “No!” Kol said and the view screen went blank. “Captain, I’ve got a lock on them.” B’Elanna announced from her station on the Bridge. “How?” Janeway asked. “I followed the coordinates of where we were being hailed from and then scanned for their signals. Kol isn’t very smart. He was talking to us from about fifteen meters from Tom and Harry’s location.” “Good work, B’Elanna.” Janeway said. She was going to miss having the chief engineer around when she went on maternity leave in a few weeks. “Get them out of there.” She ordered. "Beam them directly to sickbay." Janeway ordered B'Elanna, "And you can leave to go see them." Janeway added. ****************************************************** When B'Elanna walked into sickbay, she saw the doctor and Kes trying their hardest to revive Harry. B'Elanna stood for a moment, stunned. She then walked over to them, and looked down at Harry. Tom was standing on the other side of the bed, and his face was tear-stained. "I'm sorry. There's nothing we can do to save him." the doctor said as he looked up at Tom and B'Elanna. B'Elanna grabbed Harry's hand, and squeezed it. She tried to fight back the tears, but it was no use. They came streaming out. "Why did this have to happen?" B'Elanna asked as she looked up at Tom. He walked across to the other side of the bed, and put his hand on B'Elanna's shoulder. She turned around, and hugged him, her head resting on his shoulder, tears falling down her cheek. "It's alright. It's alright." Tom told her soothingly. She backed away, and looked at him. "It's not alright! I told Harry that the most important thing was that my child grew up with two parents, so that the child wouldn't have to live with one parent like I did. And now, they've lost their dad before even getting to meet him." she sobbed. She looked down at Harry again, and began whispering to him. "Harry, I will never forget you. You meant so much to me. I don't know how to thank you for everything you've given me." "B'Elanna?" Tom called out. "What?" she asked as she turned back to Tom. "I know that you and I haven't been on the best of terms lately, and I know that I'm not the biological father, but I promise you that I will try to be the closest I can be to a real father." he told her. She looked at him, and then hugged him. "Thank you." she whispered. ********************************************************** “Come in.” B’Elanna called. Chakotay entered the room with a sympathetic look on his face. “Are you ready?” He asked. The two of them were going to Harry’s memorial service together. “Yeah.” B’Elanna said as she stood up from the couch where she was unpacking a duffel bag. “I guess I’ll have to finish unpacking later.” “How are you holding up?” Chakotay asked as the walked through the corridors towards the Mess Hall. “I feel like history is repeating itself. I didn’t have a father and now my baby won’t.” B’Elanna said. “B’Elanna, history isn’t repeating itself. There is one difference between what is happening now, and what happened back then. And that difference is that your father chose to leave you and your mother. Harry would have never abandoned you and your baby by choice. He cared about you too much, and he loved this baby.” B’Elanna smiled up at Chakotay. *How does he always know how to make me feel better?* She wondered. “Besides,” Chakotay continued, “You aren’t alone. I’ll be here for you and so will Kathryn and Tom.” Chakotay paused at the last name. The idea of Tom and B’Elanna together used to bug the hell out of him. But, Tom had changed his life for the better. He knew that Tom was probably the best thing for B’Elanna right now. “Are you ready?” He asked her when they reached the Mess Hall doors. She nodded and the two of them entered the room. B’Elanna noticed Tom sitting alone in the corner of the room. She wanted so much to reach out to him. She had a seat next to Chakotay and turned her attention to the Captain who had stood to speak. “Harry was one of the best officers I ever had the honor of serving with.” Janeway began. “He was truly one of the bright spots of this whole mission. He was always looking for the good in every situation. I will miss him.” Tears started to well in the Captain’s eyes and she motioned to B’Elanna as she sat down. “When I first met Harry in the Ocampan hospital he was a naive, young ensign. That young ensigns grew to be one of the best friends I ever had.” B’Elanna said. “He taught me so much. He was sincere, patient, and caring. I hope that our baby will inherit that from him. I’ll never forget him.” She wiped the tears from her face and sat back down. “Would anyone else like to say anything?” Captain Janeway asked. “I would.” A voice said. Everyone turned around to see Tom standing. “Go ahead, Tom.” Janeway said as she sat back down. “I know Harry and I haven’t been on the best of terms lately.” Tom started out. “But, I will always consider him the best friend that I ever had. I don’t even feel like I deserved his friendship. Harry was one of the only people who saw me for who I was and didn’t judge me on my past.” Tears began to form in Tom’s eyes, but he forced them back. “He saved my life once. We had been arrested for a crime we didn’t commit while we were on shore leave. While we in prison, another prisoner stabbed me. I don’t remember much after that. But, I do remember him saying, ‘This man is my friend, no one touches him.’ He fought off the other prisoners and kept me alive until we were finally rescued. My only regret was that I couldn’t do the same for him on our last away mission.” ******************************************************** It had been only a few hours since Harry’s memorial service and Tom found himself standing in front of B’Elanna’s quarters. He rang the door chime and she called for him to enter. He walked into the room and found her taking clothes out of a duffel bag. She wouldn’t be moving in with Harry now. “Don’t unpack.” He told her. “What?” She asked and gave him a confused look. “I want you to move in with me.” Tom said. "What?" she asked again. "Look, B'Elanna, you were going to move in with Harry so that someone would be there if anything happened. You still need someone there, and I'd like that someone to be me. I love you, B'Elanna." he told her. She looked up at Tom in shock. He still loved her? "You still love me?" she questioned. "Yes, B'Elanna, I always have loved you, throughout all of this. I was just jealous that someone else was taking you away from me." "Tom, he wasn't taking me away from you." she said sternly. "I don't want to start fighting again. And what's your answer?" he asked. She walked over to him, and kissed him on the cheek. "Yes." *********************************************************** "Come on, B'Elanna, you're going to get through this." Tom told her reassuringly. "Oh, shut up!" she screamed at him. She was lying on a biobed, in labor, where she'd been for the past four hours, with Tom at her side through all of it. Tom, her fiancee. She couldn't believe it when, only a week ago, Tom proposed to her on the holodeck. They had changed so much since Harry's death. Tom was so concerned about her. He would come to his quarters every night to find B'Elanna holding a picture of Harry and sobbing. He would walk over to her, and put his arm around her, just letting her cry the tears that she needed to cry. "One more push, B'Elanna." Kes told her. "You shut up, too!" she screamed. "I see the head!" the doctor exclaimed. "Shut up! Everyone, just shut up!" she yelled. "It's a boy!" Kes announced. B'Elanna laid back on the bed, and looked up at Tom, who had tears streaming down his face, just the same as she did. Kes wrapped the baby in a blanket, and handed him to B'Elanna. "He looks just like Harry." B'Elanna whispered. "I think we've found a name for him." Tom whispered back. "I already had one planned out if it was a boy. Harry Thomas Kim, Jr." she told him. ************************************************ Tom smiled at B’Elanna who was sleeping on the biobed. He sat down in a chair next to the bed holding little Harry in his arms. The baby opened his dark eyes and looked up at Tom. “Hi, Harry.” Tom said softly. “How do you like life on Voyager so far? Don’t worry everyone’s not always this crazy. They’re just excited to meet you.” In the five hours since Harry Jr.’s birth he had several visitors. All of them commenting on how much he looked like Harry. “I know I’m not your real dad, and I’ll never be able to replace him.” Tom continued. “But, in a few weeks when I marry your mom, I’ll be your step dad. I’ll do my best to try and raise you so I can keep my promise to your dad. Your dad was a great guy. He was my best friend.” Tom looked over to see that B’Elanna was now awake and listening to him. “How long have you been awake?” He asked. “Long enough to know that you’ll be a great dad.” B’Elanna smiled. =/\= The End =/\= Star Trek and it’s characters are owned by Paramount, Inc.
