Emperor Scorpion
 Scientific Name:
Pandinus imperator
Distribution: Africa (mostly
Tongo and Ghana)
Size: Up to about 8", usually
4"- 6"

Temperament: Usually very
docile, does not usually sting. Can be housed in groups.
Hardiness: Very Hardy when
properly set up and cared for.
FOOD: Nutrient fed crickets,
jumbo meal worms, butter worms and even pinky (baby) mice.
HOUSING: a 10 gallon size
terrarium can house 1 pair of Emperor Scorpions. Larger groups
would need a 20 gallon or larger
terrarium. Using either a 2" layer of potting soil/sand
mixture. Or I prefer a 2" layer
of vermiculite. It gives them something good to burrow in.
Create burrows and shelters with
select cork bark slabs, and driftwood.
Remember to set up terrarium very
simple, so that it allows easy cleaning without the risk
of getting stung. Use tongs or forceps
to move terrarium items & scorpions around.
WATER: Give your scorpion
a small shallow water pan (jar lid works great) with fresh water
at couple of times a day. You should
spray mist their terrarium about once a week.
TEMPERATURE: 76 degrees-86 degrees
F. Moderate to high humidity is provided by (slightly
wetting) a section of the substrate
under a shelter that they like.
LIGHTING: Full spectrum lighting.
U/V lighting is not recommended for Scorpions. To watch
their normal behavior patterns use
a low wattage incandescent RED bulb. Use of regular
lighting will cause most scorpions
to run for cover and seek shelter and remain in hiding
until dark. Emperor Scorpions will
turn bright green when exposed to a black light.
CAUTION:
this is not recommended for a long
term use.
HEATING: An undertank reptile
heating pad placed under 1/4-1/2 of the terrarium will give
them a 24 hour bottom surface heat
maintaining a gradual change in temperature. A low
wattage incandescent RED light bulb
will help keep daytime temperatures where they need
to be. Use a thermometer to
check temperature. A cool to warm heat gradually should be
available at all times within the
terrarium.
