 Chapter One - Lucy Looks into a Wardrobe

This is about four children named Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy who were sent to the country to Professor Digory Kirke's house during World War One.  They are excited about being there, but the next day it rains.  They explore inside the huge house.  Lucy looked into a wardrobe, and finds herself in a forest!  She meets a faun who is very surprised to see Lucy.

The following questions and activity together are worth five marks.

Chapter Two    What Lucy Found There

    Mr. Tumnus (the faun)introduces himself and Narnia (where Lucy is) to her and says that he had never
before seen a human.  Mr. Tumnus thinks that the Wardrobe and the Spare Room are Countries called
“Spare Oom, and War Drobe”.  Lucy goes to his house (a cave).  The Faun told about summer in Narnia.
It’s always Winter, but never Christmas, in Narnia.  Mr. Tumnus starts to cry; therefore Lucy tells him
“Stop it at once.”.  He is a kidnapper ;and is going to take a child to the evil White Witch (Jadis).  The child
is Lucy; however now he won’t.  They left for the lamppost.  Lucy left for our world.

       Questions (worth one mark each)

Chapter Three     Edmund and the Wardrobe.
 
        Lucy came back, but she was only gone for a few seconds our time.  They looked in the wardrobe
and, to Lucy’s surprise, it didn’t go to Narnia!  Edmund was mean to her.  For one reason or another
Edmund wound up following Lucy into the wardrobe.  He, too, was in Narnia.  He looked for Lucy, but
instead of Lucy he found a sleigh.  The “Queen of Narnia” was in it.  He was sorry, “your majesty”.

       Questions (worth one mark each)

1. How do you think the wardrobe works?
2. Who was mean to her?
3. Who is she ( in # 2)?
4. Who got into Narnia also?

Activities

Make “one reason or another” for Edmund to follow Lucy into the wardrobe, remember, just Edmund.

 Chapter Four              Turkish Delight

        Edmund is not a dwarf, but a boy who found himself in Narnia by opening a door.  “Come here
and have Turkish Delight” said the “Queen of Narnia”.  The “Queen” asked Edmund about him and his
family and his world.  There are certainly two girls and two boys in his family.. He must bring his brothers
and sisters there.  The “Queen” might be angry if he came alone the next time.  Lucy now met Edmund.
Edmund thinks that Fauns are untruthful, because that’s what the “Queen” told him because the Faun says
the “Queen”  is the White Witch.  Edmund is sick.

       Questions (worth one mark each)

3. Who did Lucy meet in Narnia?
4. Edmund is ___________.

Activities

Make a type of roll or square with jam, tortillas, molasses and sugar.   Put jam on the tortillas and roll
or fold.  Cover with molasses and then sugar.           Eat.

    Chapter Five                  Back on this Side of the Door

        Edmund lied to Peter and Susan about Narnia.  Narnia is nonsense, say Peter, Susan, and Edmund.
They are telling the Professor.  He says to assume that she is telling the truth.  If things are real they are
there all the time says Peter, but Professor says “Are they?” Worlds could be anywhere.  They could mind
their own business.  The Macredy’s and a gang of people are coming; so they force them into the wardrobe.
So they go into the wardrobe.
 
       Questions (worth one mark each)
 
1. Who lied to Peter and Susan.
2. Who seems to lie a lot?
3. Who comes with a gang of people?
4. What to the children go into?

Activities

Play “Lie Detector”.  In Lie Detector one person is the Detective, one person is the Witness, and
another person is the Suspect.  You can have many detectives (Pretend not to know the Suspect, and
witnesses who have to know the Suspect).   There can be two suspects.  The Detective(s) try to figure
out who is telling the truth.  Only the Suspect(s) can lie.

 Chapter Six                       Into the Forest

        They are in Narnia.  Edmund said “I say … oughtn’t we to be bearing a bit more to the left, that is,
if we are aiming for the lamppost”. So Edmund had been there before said Peter.  They found a paper
saying that Mr. Tumnus was arrested for “harboring spies and fraternizing with humans”.  They can’t go
back because Lucy was the human in “fraternizing with humans”.  They started following a robin.  Edmund
thinks that the witch might be good.  “No chance of dinner now”, thought Edmund.

       Questions (worth one mark each)

1. Where are they?
2. What had Mr. Tumnus been arrested for?
3. Who did they follow?
4. What did Edmund think that there was no chance of now?

Activities

Play “Harbor Lucy” or follow a robin.  You play “Harbor Lucy” by picking one person to leave the
room and one to be hidden.  Send one out of the room, then hide the person who is Lucy.  Call
“Ready” and the one out of the room can come in and try to find Lucy.

 Chapter Seven              A Day With the Beavers
 
        The robin flew away; they see an animal in the bushes.  The beaver (animal) asked them to come
and be quiet.  So they came, because “We ought to be a match for one beaver if it turns out to be an
enemy.”   The beaver has the handkerchief, Lucy gave to Mr. Tumnus when he was crying (See Chapter 2),
to prove that he’s a friend.  “Aslan is on the move.”  They came to the beaver’s lovely dam.  Edmund sees
the White Witch’s castle.  They meet Mrs. Beaver.  Mr. Beaver and Peter caught some fish.  They started
cooking dinner.  They ate dinner.  It snowed so they won’t have any unwelcome visitors.

       Questions (worth one mark each)

1. What flew away?
2. What animal is in the bushes?
3. Who is on the move?
4. Who do you think (# 3) is to the beavers?

Activities

Fix “dinner” for someone, (Supervised activity).

 Chapter Eight             What Happened after Dinner

        The White Witch turned Mr. Tumnus into stone.  Aslan is the king.  Aslan is a lion.  There are
four thrones in Cair Paravel in which they must sit.  If the witch knew there were Four of you, your lives
could be in very, very serious danger.  “Where’s Edmund?” said Lucy.  So they called him, but no answer.
“We must leave”, said Mr. Beaver, “because he’s gone to the White Witch.”  Only Aslan can help us.  If he
heard about us meeting Aslan at the stone table, we must leave now!

       Questions (worth one mark each)

1. Who turned Mr. Tumnus into stone?
2. What is Aslan?
3. Where has Edmund gone?
4. Who is the only one who can help?

Activities

Make things you could be turned into (water, air, etc.) and cures for them.

  Chapter Nine             In the Witch’s House

        Edmund knew about the stone table.  Edmund is cold.  When he is “King” of Narnia he’ll make
roads.  He got wet.  He finds the Witch’s Castle and goes in.  he sees a lion statue.  He thinks that the statue
is Aslan and jeers at it.  He finds a live wolf.  He goes in further.  Aslan is coming and his brother and
sisters are at the beavers.

       Questions (worth one mark each)

1. Edmund is ___________.
2. Edmund got wet.  Why?
3. ________ is coming.
4. After awhile do you think that he realizes that Aslan is not stone?

Activities

Make a story about what you would do if you were king.

   Chapter Ten              The Spell Begins to Break

        The Beavers, Peter, Susan and Lucy pack for the journey ahead.  They will get through.  They left.
They are in a cave.  Someone comes, they come out.  Father Christmas (the English version of Santa Claus)
was there.  (In this story – this is real  O.K.?).  Father Christmas will give Mrs. Beaver a sewing machine,
Mr. Beavers’ dam will be finished by Father Christmas.  Peter got a sword and shield, with a sword belt
and sheath.  Susan got a bow and arrows and a horn; Lucy got a cordial of medicine and a dagger.  Then
Father Christmas gave them breakfast and was on his way.
 
       Questions (worth one mark each)

1. What did Mr. Beaver get from Father Christmas?
2. What did Mrs. Beaver get from Father Christmas?
3. What did Peter get from Father Christmas?
4. What did Susan get from Father Christmas?

Make a list of what you want for Christmas or make up another “Father Christmas”.

 Chapter Eleven          Aslan is Nearer

        Edmund was given dry bread instead of Turkish Delight.  The wolf Maurgim was told by the
witch to kill anyone or anything at the Beavers.  He left.  The witch, Edmund, and the dwarf were on their
way.  There is a Celebration in the wood.  Father Christmas gave the things to the celebraters.   The witch
turned them to stone and hit Edmund.  There is running water.  They must walk.  The snow is melting.
There are thousands of birds.  This is Spring, her winter had been destroyed.

       Questions (worth one mark each)

1. What was Edmund given?
2. What did Edmund want instead?
3. What was the wolf’s name?
4. What was the wolf told to do?

Make new seasons.  (If you id this for “The Magician’s Nephew” make them for your new world.

 Chapter Twelve          Peter’s First Battle

        The Beavers and the children with them slowed down and took off their coats.  They climb a hill
and see the sea.  They see Aslan.  Aslan asks what Edmund is doing.  Because Aslan asked, Mr. Beaver
says “He has tried to betray them and joined the White Witch.”  They feast.  Aslan shows Peter the sea, a
horn sounds.  Peter is soon fighting Maugrim (the wolf).  He won and became Sir Peter Wolf’s-Bane.
During this, some others followed another wolf to find Edmund.

Write a skit about someone ( A hero from your made up world) becoming a knight.

 Chapter Thirteen          Deep Magic From the Dawn of Time

        Edmund is tied.  The White Witch will summon her friends and kill Edmund.  A knife is
sharpened.  The search party rescued Edmund wondering “ What’s this stump and rock?”  and left.  The
rock was the dwarf and the stump was the White Witch.  The other children see Edmund.  The White Witch
comes into the camp.  Aslan has a traitor there and the White Witch has the right to kill traitors.  Aslan has
a meeting with the White Witch.  Aslan made a promise to the White Witch.  The promise will be kept.
 
       Questions (worth one mark each)

2. Who does the White Witch want to kill?
3. The other children see ___________.
4. Aslan has a ____________  there.

Activities

Make a promise that would make the witch lose her claim on Edmund’s life.

Chapter Fourteen        The Triumph of the Witch

        Everyone moved to the Fords of Beruna.  Aslan drilled Peter on battle plans and told him that he
might not be at the battle.  Aslan is leaving camp.  Lucy and Susan follow him because they can’t sleep.
They can come as long as they stop at a certain place.  Aslan is lonely; he goes on alone.  The Witch says
“Bind Aslan”.  Aslan is shaved and teased and muzzled.  They tied him to the Stone Table.  The Witch kills
Aslan.

       Questions (worth one mark each)

Activities

Pretend you are Lucy.  Write a story about your adventures.

Chapter Fifteen        Deeper Magic From Before the Dawn of Time

        The Witch thinks that she will win the war.  They took of the muzzle.  Mice are eating the cords
off Aslan.  It’s morning.  They hear a loud noise and Aslan’s body is gone.  The Stone Table is broken and
Aslan is alive!  They play with Aslan.  They feel rested.  They ride on Aslan.  They are in the Witch’s
castle.

       Questions (worth one mark each)

1. Who thinks that she will win the war?
2. What did they take off?
3. ________ is alive!
4. Where are they in the last sentence?

Activities

Make up a reward for the mice for chewing up the cords.

Chapter Sixteen        What happened about the Statues

        Aslan breathes on the stone lion, (Remember the one Edmund thought was Aslan) and it came to
life!  All the statues came to life when Aslan breathed on them.  They search the castle.  Mr. Tumnus was
found as a statue and Aslan breathed on him.  Giant Rumble-Buffin (who used to be a statue) kicked down
the gates.  Giant Rumble-Buffin is nice.  The small animals and the dwarfs and the children rode on the
large animals and the centaurs.  When they got to the battle Peter and the White Witch were fighting.
Aslan attacked the Witch and the fighting animals started to fight.

2. What is  that lion remembered for?
3. Who did they find?
4. Who attacked the White Witch?

Activities

Play Statue tag.  There is one freezer and one unfreezer and one timer needed.  There can be any
number of other people.  The unfreeze person counts to 100, during which time the freezer will touch
and freeze as many as possible.  Then the unfreeze person can free them.  If the freezer catches the
unfreeze person, they can not do anything for ten seconds.  If everyone is frozen at the same time, the
freezer wins.  If everyone is unfrozen the unfreeze person wins.

Chapter Seventeen        The Hunting of the White Stag

        Edmund helped the most, he is wounded.  Lucy begins to give her cordial to the sick and
wounded.  Aslan un-stones people.  King Peter, Queen Susan, King Edmund and Queen Lucy  are their
titles now.  They govern well.  They are called: King Peter the Magnificent, Queen Susan the Gentle, King
Edmund the Just and Queen Lucy the Valiant   They hunt the white stag who, if you catch it, will give you
a wish.  They see a “pillar of iron with a lantern set on the top”.  They now remember that is called a
lamppost.  It is only the beginning of their adventures in Narnia.  During their time in Narnia, the next book
“The Horse and His Boy” happens.

2. Edmund is ___________.
3. What do they hunt?
4. Who do you think tells them that it is only the beginning of their adventures in Narnia?

Activities

Have a “bandaging contest”.  Who can bandage the fastest or best.
Or – Help someone who is sick.
