Our Country

Dear Mrs Shah and class

Thank you for your email.

Our country's capital is London. Some other main cities are Manchester and Birmingham.

At Easter I'm moving to Scotland which is to the north of our country. From were I live, Scotland is over 300 miles away. I'm moving to a city called Aberdeen but I'm not moving inside the city. I've been told that Aberdeen is a nice place. Aberdeen is at the seaside and the beaches there are better than they are abroad.

The British Isles are made up of 4 different countries. Their names are England ,Wales,Scotland and Northen Ireland.

We live 20 miles away from the sea. One place is called Blackpool which is at the seaside. In Blackpool there is a tower, which is called Blackpool Tower which is 102 years old. There is a pleasure beach, a pleasure beach is a place with rides in it like roller coasters, mazes etc. Blackpool holds the biggest roller coaster in Europe .

Birmingham is a large city. There are lots of people around. There are many places to visit. Birmingham is a very busy city. Birmingham is mainly busy in the evenings because people come back from work then and main roads are always busy from 6 am to 8 pm. What is your city like?

Lent

Date: Tue, 20 Jan 1998 19:09:38 +0000

Hello !

In a few months there is a festival called Easter. Easter is a Christian Festival which is remembering the killing and celebrating the bringing back to life of Jesus.

On the 24th of February it is a tradition to eat Pancakes to use up all the ingredients that people have left before Lent . (However, the date changes each year) This Day is called Shrove Tuesday.

On the 25th of February it is the start of Lent. This is Ash Wednesday. Lent lasts for 40 days. Easter is at the end of Lent.

On good Friday the tradition is to eat Hot-Cross buns. This day was also the day when Jesus was killed. Easter is when Jesus was brought back from the dead. This year Easter Sunday falls on the 12th of April.

At Easter people give each other lots of chocolates and sweets. Somtimes the chocolate is in the form of bunnies and eggs.

The end of Easter marks the start of Spring.

Our class is 5 J. There are 8 classes in the school each with about 30 children. In class we do all different subjects including maths, p.e., literacy time, history, science, geography and technology.

In literacy time we do all different things like computer work, handwriting, browsing through books, word games and library research.

We have been looking at books about India. They are very interesting.

A typical day
On school days people get up at around 7 or 8 am because the school bell goes at 8.55am. When I get to school I play in the playground with my friends until the bell goes.

We usually do maths first thing and then we go down to the hall for assembly where we sing hymns and listen to stories. after assembly it's playtime for 15 minutes.

After that we work again until 12 when it is lunchtime. Lunchtime finishes at1.15pm and we then go back to our classes to work until 3.30pm

What is you school day like?

Ice Hockey

Date: Tue, 20 Jan 1998 19:09:38 +0000

Hello!

We have a sport called ice hockey which I practise on the street with roller blades.

In this game there are two sides of 12 with a puck and large sticks which have a curved bottom. We try to hit the puck, which is a small cylinder, into a small pair of nets. We use blades with a thin blade to glide across the ice.
