Windmills

Date: Tue, 10 Mar 1998 03:19:44 PST

Dear Mrs. Shah and class.

Thank you for the mail you sent me. Now I will explain some things.

Windmills were built to pump water out of big lakes. When all the water was out of it the people could live in it or built food on it. The mills must pump and pump, becaus the land is lower than the sea and if you don't pump the water away the land will be flooded. At the moment the mills are only used for entertainment for tourists. Now big machines pump the water away.

In Holland we have much land which is pumped dry. We also have won a whole province out of the water. The people did this because they needed land. The land is as big as 145 km2. Now a lot people lives on the land there. In Holland the people still need land.

Do you also have such things in India?

Royal Family

Date: Thu, 26 Mar 1998 01:59:13 PST

Hello everybody in India,

Sorry for writing you so late.

You asked me to tell you something about our royal family.

I participated last year a match, called Thinkquest, maybe you've heard about it. I made an internet-site with two of my classmates about typically Dutch things. The address is http://library.advanced.org/11318, there you can find a lot of information about things in Holland.

Our royal family. We have a queen, Queen Beatrix. She's married with Prince Claus, he has a german accent. They have 3 sons, Johan-Friso, Constantijn and Willem-Alexander. Willem Alexander will be the next King, but he hasn't got a wife yet. Willem-Alexander does a lot of sportive things, like being in the Olympic Comity and if there is a match with a Dutch team, like hockey, he comes to watch the game and he congratulate them if they win (he comes thruth the security, I don't know how). Queen Beatrix is always smiling, always friendly, but also carring about her people and the people in other countries.

Our country is ruled by a democracy, we have a parlement and a minister-president called Kok. He's also nice, and does a lot for everybody in the world.

And what about India, do you have a democracy?,

Currency

Date: Tue, 10 Mar 1998 03:19:44 PST

Dear Mrs. Shah and class.

Thank you for the mail you sent me.

Currency
In Holland we have the guilder. One guilder is 100 cents. We have coins of 5, 10, 25 cents and coins of 1, 2 1/2, 5 guilders. We also have notes of 10, 25, 50, 100, 250 and 1000 guilder.

$1 (one US dollar) = 2 guilder [HLF1/-]

The notes have different colors.
HFL 10,- = blue,
HFL 25,- = red/pink
HFL 50,- =yellow/orange
HFL 100,- = brown/grey
HFL 250,- =purple
HFL 1000,- = green

We don't have different sizes off notes but the coins aren't the same size. The smallest is the 10 cents coin and the biggest the 2 1/2 guilders coin.

Klompen - Wooden Shoes

Date: Thu, 19 Mar 1998 01:15:36 PST

Dear Mrs. Shah and class,

Now I will tell you about wooden shoes. We cal them "klompen". I don't know where that name comes from. A long time ago many people wore those things. They are made of wood. They are very strong, much stronger than shoes. Right now many farmers and people who built houses and buildings. Many people associate Holland with "klompen", but as you see I don't know very much about them. If you want to know more about "klompen", windmills etc. you can look it up on page http://library.advanced.org/11318

I hope to hear from you soon.

The Euromast

Date: Tue, 10 Mar 1998 03:19:44 PST

Dear Mrs. Shah and class.

Thank you for the mail you sent me. Now I will explain some things.

The Euromast is a big tower in Rotterdam in Holland. You can walk up a lot of stairs and then you can look over the city. On the top of the tower stands a television- and radioantenne. They are sending signals to everywere in the country. Many people go visit the Euromast. Soon the tower will be made higher. People are going to built a new top on it. I don't know how high it is, but I think about 185 meters.

How are you in India? I'm fine. Thank you very much for your mail.

I'm a 14 years-old girl who lives in the Netherlands. At school we can get on the Internet and we can mail, if we want to.

I'm in the 3rd class of the highschool in Holland, but in India I think that's the 10th class.

At school I learn Dutch of course (the language all the people in Holland speak), English, French, German, Spanish and if we like to we can also try to learn some Danish (the language the people speak in Denmark (also Europe)).

There are only a view schools in Holland which teach Spanish, and the school I'm on is one of them.

I wear most of the time ordinary clothes, jeans, a T-shirt, a sweater, socks, shoes. A lot of children wear clothes with brand names like nike, levis, adidas, reebok, but I don't. In my class it doesn't matter what kind of clothes you wear, by the way in my class there are only 9 boys and 4 girls (including me). But most of the classes in Holland are classes of about 30 students. In Holland the students don't (have to) wear a school uniform.

I've got a lot of subjects at school: English, Dutch, French, German, Spanish, Mathemathics, Economy, Sciences, Fysics, Chemistry, Information technology, History, Geography, Philosophy, Culture, Acting, Drawing, and P.E. What a list, isn't it?

I go to school by bike, as most of the students in Holland. How do you go to school?

Bye

Dear Mrs Bharti Shah and class,

Hello all of you in India. How are you? I'm allright.

I speak Dutch, the language everybody speaks in Holland, but also in Belgium. At school I learn English, French, German en Spanish. I think speaking English isn't very hard, but languages like French or Spanisch are difficult sometimes.

I often wear a jeans with a T-shirt and a sweater. Here in Holland some expensive brandnames, like Nike, Levis and Fila are very popular at young people.

In my class are thirteen students and in my school are 1800 students.

I go to school with the bus. Its a long trip of about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

I don't have to wear schooluniforms, and I'm glad I don't have to. Do you have to wear one?

I have a lot of favourite tv-programs, like Heartbreak High (an Australian production), "Oud geld" ("Old money", a Dutch production) and some comedy's. My favorite movie is "Independance day". Coming Saturday I have a party of a friend of mine. We go to the movie "Titanic", I hhope it is a nice one. I don't have a favourite popgroup. I like a lot of music.

Bye, bye,
