The Michigan Alliance for Gifted Education, in cooperation with the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC), is pleased to announce the NAGC - Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Awards program. The awards, funded by the Nicholas Green Foundation, are designed to recognize excellence in young children. The Awards, which will include a U.S. Savings Bond, will be made in every state to a student who is between grades 3 and 6 who has distinguished him-or herself in academics, leadership, or the arts.
The Nicholas Green Foundation was established by Maggie and Reg Green to honor the memory of their seven-year-old son Nicholas who was killed in a drive-by shooting while visiting Italy in 1994. The Greens started the Distinguished Student Awards because they felt it was important to recognize gifts and talents in children who are now at the age that Nicholas was when he died.
The Michigan Alliance for Gifted Education and NAGC are honored to be part of the Greens' generous spirit. We look forward to seeing that Nicholas' legacy benefits young children who demonstrate excellence from fine and performing arts to leadership positions to academic achievement. We believe that this award program will not only stimulate children to achieve to their fullest potential, but that it will highlight high ability students and draw attention to the educational needs of our nation's gifted and talented students.
