______________
1. Great news - key parts of S. 505 (The Gifted and Talented Students Education Act) are being rolled in to the Senate re-authorization bill for the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). Mark-up in the Senate
HELP
Committee will occur Wednesday - March 1, 2000. You may view a Summary of the Chairman's Mark of S. 2, Title III, Part C (The Jacob Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Act) or view the entire bill on the Senate HELP committee website: <http://www.senate.gov/~labor/>
(If viewing the full bill in PDF, look for the section on gifted beginning on page 33.)
The even better news is that the Senate version, as the NNFGC had requested, includes up to 2% for parental support. Thank you Senator Jeffords!
We will do a follow-up message with specifics of the gifted portion of S.2 and actions you can take to help gain support of the full Senate. In the meantime, if you were one of the many gifted supporters who contacted your senators and members of the HELP committee, pat yourself on the back. Nice work!
(The House ESEA re-authorization bill, which included components of HR 637,passed in the Fall of 1999. Once S.2 passes in the Senate, a Conference Committee will iron out differences between the two bills.)
