Gifted and Talented Listservs (Mailing Lists)

Listservs are automated e-mail lists. They only send the mailings to those who subscribe. There is no cost to subscribe. Each has a different focus and the amount of e-mail you recieve daily will vary depending on the topic discussed and the size ouf the group. Some listservs are moderated and the moderator reads all messages before sending them on. This prevents the spread of spam.

A couple of suggestions:

1. First of all lurk (observe a while) before responding to any topic. The conversation may have been going on for weeks before you subscribed. Or just began this morning.
2. Read the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions), a fact sheet usually in outline form, which describes the ground rules of the discussion and the role of the moderator. Your welcoming message will tell you where they are found.
3. Don't type all in captials. IT IS CONSIDERED SHOUTING!
4. Consider unsubscribing if you are going on vacation, because even though you like getting 12 messages each day from the listserv, how much are you going to like 84 old messages when you are gone for a week?
5. Remember your correspondence to the listserv is public.
6. Some listservs collect the older letters in an archive on the web. You can browse these for background. The FAQ will discuss this.
7. Enjoy yourself , just remember some Internet Service Providers have a limit on the number of e-mails you can have waiting to be read. (A friend of mine subscribed to the Def Lepard listserv and got 400 e-mails in 2 weeks. AOL rejected all other mail because he was full.)
8. Keep your sense of humor close at hand.
