This page is a few days premature! It was publicized this week for Critical Mass in order to distribute stickers this month, a major boost. We are calling for a new Berkeley Train station to address the traffic and parking crisis in Berkeley. With a comfortable stration station more travelers to Berkeley will use Amtrak, and leave their cars behind. This may especically apply to students because gas costs are overpassing train ticket costs. Students already pay for bus passes, so the train station will be cheap and easy. The following sections are under construction:

The Berkeley Amtrak platform is served by a decent number of Amtrak and AC transit routes including the 51. Be prepared, there is not even a telephone booth to call Amtrak, or a comfortable waiting area, let alone restrooms, information desk or bike lockers.return home

campaign for Berkeley Train Station!

return home

Organize this fall for a train station in Berkeley ASAP! Even the simplest train station will reduce the traffic and parking crisis in Berkeley. timetable

Currently Amtrak is problematic for Berkeley and students and travelers, so more of them drive their cars instead.

We need a station, with telephones, lights, a waiting room and restrooms.

The station will make Amtrak very convenient for many students, easier than parking. With a station, more people will travel to Berkeley via train, not cars. Less traffic! Less parking garages needed.return home

An arguement for:

Berkeley has the money to build a nice station at the foot of University Avenue, already served by several bus and train routes. Only improved Transit and future gas shortages will easy Berkeley's gruesome traffic problem. Amtrak service to Berkeley has been gradually improving, but the trainstop itself is the largest deterrent to potential car-less commuters and students.

There is a train stop, but not even a pay phone to call Amtrak. The train stop is not a comfortable place. Something could be done immediately, even a phone to call Amtrak or a temporary portable building with lights and restrooms.

This year the City of Berkeley has enough money to build a nice station, but it might take a year or two. The process must be started so that people coming to Berkeley will not need either parking garages or create traffic jams.

(PS: Parking garages are much more expensive than train stations. More students will simply leave their cars at home when they canconveniently take Amtrak. Less cars, less traffic, less parking garages.)

The truth is, many of the parking garages being planned in Berkeley now will not be needed in five years. Driving costs will continue to increase, and transit alternatives will also be improved within that time.return home

Timetable:

ASAP, there should be a temporay station, but the main priority must be getting a quality permanent station. Strawberry Creek will flow right past the station! A beautiful image for everyone who rides the frequent trains through Berkeley.

There is no reason for delay. The funds are available now, and if we don't fund a station now, the money will probably get wasted without relieving the traffic problem.

Berkeley had a station, and it needs one now. This issue should be tackled by the City Council this fall, with funding reserved for both the temporary and permanent stations by winter. Then students and the U.C. will know that there alternatives to wasting the U.C. funds on parking garages that will only add to future gridlock. More housing, less cars!
