thistle-sea legs.

6 song EP on Tiberius Records, made in 1999.3 piece band that ha s already received critical acclaim for their 1997 release tremble kisses. Again for those who dont know, Tiberius Records is a label that helps Cincinnati-land bands. 25:42 for this CD, averaging out to about 4:17 a song, perfect for a emo/indy band like this. The band immediately gets a plus because they are likened to Bob Mould, whom some of you may know as the mastermind behind the Daily Shows theme song. Unfortunately, this is the first band in the last 6 CDs we reviewed that doesnt have a lyrics sheet attached. It really is a pity because Im sure thistle has some incredibly meaningful lyrics that are lost during the more rough parts of the CD. Sea Legs is very professionally recorded, and thistle sounds like a million dollars. Golden vocals, sharp, very insightful guitar lines, and perfectly fitting drum beats al work together to make excellent music. Thistle is the 2nd band out the last three Ive received to have the bass player also singing lead vocals, and Toby with thistle is much better then Teri and Suk, due to better recording, playing, and song writing skills. All of the songs have a common base, but this in no way means that thistle is repetitive in the least. On the title track, Mikes guitar solo is completely amazing, in one of the many things that makes this track the best on the CD. One of the other great things about the track is the heavenly singing of Machel Hicks. Birth of a City State shows the return to a harder edged band and the chorus rules too, being excellent in itself. Ricks drums definitely are one of the high points on this track. If there is a resurgence in the popularity of Indy music, I would suggest to look for thistle, as they have their fingers on the pulse of this genre. There isnt a thank you list on this CD< which may just be an oversight, or it could be because they know they simply are that good. Western Fight Song sounds like the closing song in a mid-1990s coming to age flick, and I mean that with all good intentions. She Also Took That begins with a guitar line that would put Robert Smith of the Cure to shame. The song is a open play to a lost loved one that the singer thinks hat they should have stayed together.
