Rarely Stood Intelligence, 1999. Jimmy Slash, of the Farleys fame, was the guitarist for this band. Normally I dont cover CDs this old, but it does help to get an idea of what progress Jimmy has made as a guitarist. I had a good feeling about this CD when the Les Claypoolian bass solo started off the track. Unfortunately, the song quickly degenerates into a rap/rock song called May Day. All and all, with the amazing bass and the screeching guitars on one side, and the atrocious style of rap on the other, May Day evens out to be a mediocre song, at best. Thing about old Beastie Boys meeting Dream Theater while Les Claypool is at the house. Gimme Sugar is slightly better, as some of the chorus has a vaguely indy rock feel, and the strong guitar/bass continues through this song. Gimme Sugar is interesting in the back that it details a guys escapades in which a girl felliciates the guy and he procreates with her without using a rubber. Common, humdrum topics are covered by Todds relatively shoddy rapping, while the guitar, bass, and to a lesser extent, the drums are completely blowing the Eminem style vocals out of the water. Back To The Grind has a backup vocal style reminiscent of Deliverance-Era Corrosion of Conformity, meeting with Kid Rock. To give Todd some credit, his rhymes start out innovative and fresh, but unfortunately go south very quickly. The formula may have worked for Rage Against The Machine, but in this case the rap-style vocals actually detract severely from the work as a whole. The delivery isnt bad, but the topic matter is repetitive and just needs to be mixed around. If you want to be witness to another review of Jimmys amazing guitar styling, please check out the review of The Farleys: Youth In Asia. With this review, I will be fair to all parties involved, and review them separately.
