Red Animal War is a very cool Indie-Rock band that reminds me at least of At the Drive-In and Thursday. Every part of the band contributes and the end result meshes so well together that it makes an entirely driving work The first song, "77", starts off slowly and eventually just rises in intensity until a climax is reached. Red Animal war also tends to experiement much more with guitar lines then many of the bands I've had the pleasure to review in the last few years. This trend is most clearly shown in tracks like "Modus Operandi", which is for me, the best track on this incredibly short disc.
Slowride is a more pop-punk influenced band, with nods to a lot of the three-chord acts of the last ten year. In their defense, though, they pull off the pop-punk sound as good as anyone, including such great bands as Midtown and the like. The music that Slowride plays, especially in tracks like "Jesus Candle", really add a bouncing beat to an almost over-played genre. If this part of the review is vague, listen to such acks as Foo Fighters, River City High, and the aforementioned Midtown, as these guys are definitely similar in sound.
These bands really work at odds during this split. While Red Animal War is slow and plodding, Slowride plays much more like a band attempting to be played on the radio. While I have heard some good splits in the past, this one does not fit as well as something like the Skiba/Seconds split. Both bands are pretty good on their own regard, but when they are put together, and in an alternative fashion, no less, a listeners' ears tend to get tired from bouncing back and forth between the two musical styles.
