Randy ? Cheater

Another really short CD, this time from one of my favorite acts of 2001, Randy, an act that catches perfectly the urgency of such bands as the Hellacopters and Gluecifer while still heavily influenced by 1980-era The Cure. The title track, with the repeated chorus, seems more in places on a Donnas records than anything. The subject material of the lyrics really owes a lot to bands such as Ramones, with tracks like "I Don't Wanna Work" and "I Won't Play That Song." By far, the standout track on this disc would have to be "Stepping Out", as it explores song structure that is not directly influenced by one of the larger punk bands of the last twenty years. Feeling out of their element, Randy gets back to the tried-and-true method of relating their music to other large acts, with "Addicts of Communication", which sounds like a play right out of the book of Rancid, Good Charlotte, or the like. This is not to say that the song is bad, as I know I was tapping my foot the whole time, but the whole disc could use a fresh infusion of music styles, as even in the short running time, the music started to all run together.

Rating : 6.1/10.
