John Wilkes Booze – Five Pillars of Soul Vol. 2

If you all remember right, I did a review of this show that this band was headlining a little bit ago in this very magazine. However, I bought a CD at the show and have taken this long to review it. I do apologize. This CD is really not indicative of their style at all, as they are so much more live than they are on a CD. However, I will ignore that I saw them live for the duration of this review and write a review that is purely objective. John Wilkes Booze really sounds like a seventies band, and with quotes separating some of the songs on the disc from that same period, it really sounds that way. The songs, especially "A Butcher's Tale", have a very whimsical sound to them, along with a sound that just is so rich and full. A number of layers of instrumentation, both in a vocal and musical sense, really create an indiscernible sound. All and all, this disc really has something to give to everyone, from the electric organ to the purely innovative voice of the singer to the screeching guitar lines of the guitarist. Simply put, buy this album. I got mine for 5 dollars, and I have never regretted it. Make sure you pick up a copy directly from the band or Affirmation records, at http://www.affirmationrecords.com . Also, make sure that you see this band live. If you would like to gain an idea of what they sound like live, check out my review from the show I attended.
