Hell Brothers – 12 Steps To Heaven
. 13 songs, made in 2000 on Garageland Records. They are a 4 piece band from San Francisco that play indy rock, with an average song length of 3:45.On tracks like “12 Steps To Heaven”, riffs that parallel Pink Floyd really propel the track along. “Dream Date” starts out as a wank fest, with screeching guitars that match perfectly with the lyrics being sung. For some reason, on the lyrics sheet, only 5 songs are covered, and they have no basis for choosing these songs. Also on “Dream Date”, Louie’s drumming skills are put to the ultimate test. For “St.poster Girl”, a famous old song is modified for the purpose of good. A great number of these songs, much like a great deal of bands today, are about losing love. On the back cover of the CD, a D.O.A. album is spotted, which is perhaps one of the most misleading album backs I’ve ever seen. While some members of the band may be influenced by D.O.A., the Hell Brothers are musically more influenced by musicians such as Elliot Smith and Sean Lennon. “Fade To Black” contains some excellent guitar riffs, but what I find interesting is that the bass is not very noticeable on the CD, as the rums and guitars tend to dominate the soundscape. “Wyoming Trailer Park” has the Hell Brothers going in a much more southern style to further peak the interest to the listeners of the CD. “Not Comin Home” shows finally that the bassist hasn’t fallen asleep in more punky styled song that still clings to a great deal of the rock influences. “Not Comin Home” also features a very cool bass solo, which definitely makes up for the lack of the bass earlier. “Sanitarium” is a quite interesting song, as the song as little to do with the title, and is consequently quite funny. An interesting quote is used in the beginning of “Infected”, which is in my opinion too long, especially for a typical Hell Brothers song like this. “Whipped!” also has interesting bass lines, and the lyrics are funny and slightly satirical. There are no cover songs on this CD, which makes me think that the Hell Brothers are proud of their music. This CD really is odd in its day and age, and it should be bought for its originality.
