Hangnail – Facing Changes

– 2 CD set, BEC Recordings, in this, one CD is electric, and one is acoustic. The 2nd CD will be reviewed separately, but the first CD is 12 tracks that average out to 3:26 per. Very strong guitars a la Unwritten Law start off “Wrong is Wrong”. This 4 piece band is very solid, and the vocals on this disc are really something to be proud of. “65,000 Miles Away”, along with most of the rest of the CD, contain catchy hooks and vocals are delivered that are amazing. One can only wonder when Hangnail will be played on mTV, as I believe that it will only be a matter of time until they will be recognized with Sum 41 and SR-71 as the new carriers of the pop-punk flag. The references to God and the such are much more subtly hidden then in most Christian music, but are accessible to anyone to bothers to listen closely With music that has much darker choice of subject matter, “Closemouthed Concern” is a open plea for those that might have slipped from the path of Christ to come back to the flock. “Commitment Unbreakable” has more of the SoCal sound that flourished in the late 1980s, with more metal-style guitars in a call for conversion in what seems like a ludicrist running time for a punk song (4:55). “All That You Wanted” fits in perfectly with all of the other tracks on the CD. The song’s length, which seems scary at first, really doesn’t sound long at all. “Taken For Granted” is another sharp sounding song that has some of the best bass lines on the disc, which are played by Mike Middleton. “Facing Changes” has one of the most applicable messages on the disc, which is to not place hope in worldly things. One of the best things about Hangnail is that there are no weak spots on this disc. “Home Sick” is a song that is extremely good-natured, saying that the world is in shambles but Heaven will always be there for those who are forgiven. Also on the final track amazing bass playing and a killer bass solo make this a track to remember. One might think that this CD would get depressing with all of the discussion of dark issues, but after listening to the CD I was still in high spirits. One can only hope that hangnail has a long and illustrious career

Hangnail-acoustic CD
. 6 tracks which come in at 20:33. This first track, “Double Standard”, begins with a very Spanish influence to it. But, as always with hangnail, the music and especially guitars are amazing. The tempo for this song, unlike most acoustic songs, is at a speedy pace and sounds quite a bit like the fifteen hit, “Teenage Wonderland” mixed with a little bit of Carlos Santana. Church bells are a welcome addition to the acoustic version of “Carry Me”, has a vibe much like the Smashing Pumpkins hit, “Disarm”. This is due to the bells and also the violin in the track, which adds so much to this already impressive track. What is truly original with hangnail is the recording of the acoustic guitars on the CD, adding a rougher sound by (I think at least), placing the microphone nearer the hole in the guitar. The third track, “Decision Making”, keeps the mix interesting with bongos, violins, and a plethora of other instruments that I really am not sure of (Perhaps a Cello). A very fast entrance to “Friendly Advice”, the fourth track, brings more punk into the acoustic arena with another smattering of the SoCal styles of Oohs and Aahs. Also to be noted during the track is a wonderful mixing and matching of the guitar arrangements during the tracks. The only real regret that I have with this CD is the fact that there are no lyrics sheet provided. Small potatoes, I know, but any way you cut it, this band is simply great. For example, in the fifth track, the acoustic version of “Closemouthed Concern”, Tori-Amosesque piano is used along with (again, I guess) a cello. What I am very surprised on this disc is the fact that a praise tune or famous cover is not included on the disc. This is a great companion disc to the punky stylings of “Facing Changes”, yet also makes a wonderful CD, just on its own merit.
