Indy rock with very catchy guitar riffs that induce longing when they are mulled over. �Simpler Side of Love� has one of the most different deliveries I have heard in a CD, with typical indy style guitars and odd-happy vocals. The bass on the tracks is a definite plus as it is audible and extremely well-played. The Diligents are polite in the fact that they include lyric sheets with the CD, further letting me enjoy this CD, as I don�t need to wonder about what they are singing, if that was a problem. The recording on this disc is such a high quality that the vocals are crisp and listenable. The vocals on �Only In Your Head� sound vaguely like They Might Be Giants, and this nice sounding song is betrayed by the overtly sexual tones of the song. The Diligents are of such a level that they could be on Muchmusic or M2, as they are that damned good. �Typical Criminal� totally changes the style of music that the Diligents play, starting out wh a hard rock edge then fading into an 1990�s alternative rock sound. By far, �Typical Criminal� will be played in my stereo a lot, due to the pseudo-Queensryche sound of it, and the music that the hardest part of the song is pared with. As with all of the Diligents� songs, the opening to �Dad� is simply phenomenal, leading to a Foo Fighter-ish riff (My Hero) and strung out lines that remind one of Shawn Lennon. The Diligents are good at contradictions, as they can play a number of diametrically opposite styles but yet find a way to tie all of the conflicting sounds together to make a wonderful album. Even the lyrics change moods, from lively to angry to depressed. It all adds to the experience.
