A Symbol of Our Cause
The war came and they asked us for our rings
They wanted the gold
to help finance the war

I traded my gold ring for a ring of steel
It hung heavy on my hand with honor and pride
But their ships grew weak and needed repair
So I traded my ring of steel for a ring of iron
Which rang a sweet note when it struck metal
But their iron reserves soon grew cold and empty
So I traded my ring of iron for a ring of lead
Which poisoned my skin with esteem and tribute
But their bullets ran short and soon the guns were useless
So I traded my ring of lead for a ring of stone
Which made my fingers ache with its noble weight
But their walls grew thin from the raging bullets
So I traded my ring of stone for a ring of wood
Which splintered my skin with its jagged edges
But the forests were burnt and the men had no fire
So I traded my ring of wood for a ring of glass
Which was shining and beautiful with the love for my country
But the glass ring shattered and sliced my skin
So I traded my ring of glass for a ring of blood
Which drips from my fingertips in red exhalation
But what the war took in supplies it made up in broken bodies
Blood is the most abundant supply of them all
And I wear my ring proudly as a symbol of our cause
