Magnolia Cemetary
Charleston, SC
Nestled away in what now is an industral section of Charleston, SC is one of the state's most beautiful cemetaries, and one of my favorites, the Magnolia Cemetary.
Spread out over 93 acres, Magnolia is abutted in the front by smaller cemetaries and in the rear by a salt marsh with a spectacular view of Charleston's famous Cooper River Bridges.
Surrounding beautiful manmade lakes complete with ducks and geese and a quaint wooden walking bridge Magnolia has a way of putting your troubles in perspective!
[ETCHING ON STONE]
(from GERMELSHAUSEN The MUSICAL)
ARNOLD:
Quiet journeys without a stir-
One small fleeting shadow cast-
A flicker in the darkness-
To show a life has passed.
Partial footprint in the dust-
An old unfinished song-
Barely anything at all-
To prove someone has gone.
CHORUS:
Except etching on a stone-
So very little there-
To tell of ones' accomplishments-
Of things that they would share.
Except etching on a stone-
A name without a face-
A world of expectations-
Lie buried in this place.
ARNOLD:
A handful of lives are noticed-
Maybe written in a book-
Yet all are truly noteworthy-
If we could aught but look.
Aside from reining Kings and Queens-
Prophets,and the very bad-
Thousands are unknown to anyone-
Or the lives they had had-
ALTERNATING VOICES (with each line):
Dearest papa-
Lifelong friend-
Kind and loving mother-
On you we did depend.
Our beloved grandfather-
Military genus-
May he rest in peace-
Only death came between us.
Obedient servant-
All misery past-
Loved by one and all-
No troubles at last.
ALL:
In Memory-
In Memory.
ALTERNATING VOICES:
Sweet little lamb-
Angel come to earth-
Gone home to Jesus-
Died at birth.
Lived a ripe old age-
Died so very young-
Loyal to his country-
His life just begun.
Honest merchant-
Petty thief-
Executed for crimes-
May she rest in peace.
ALL:
In Memory-
In Memory.
ALTERNATING VOICES:
Beloved sister-
Humble wife-
Benevolent caregiver-
Free from strife.
Shepherd of his flock-
Caller in the night-
Toiled without tears-
May his soul take flight.
Leader of his country-
Scholarly and wise-
Went down with his ship-
Apple of dad's eyes.
ALL:
In Memory-
In Memory.
ARNOLD:
Dear Gertrud, here's my passion-
The basis of my drive-
Is to have my life a testament-
A concrete rememberence-
Of my,Arnold Klass's live!
To be more than-
Etching on a stone-
Much more than that is there-
To tell of my accomplishments-
Of the things that I would share.
