Favorite Husker moments: any game with the '83 Husker explosion. Finally beat OU (I believe 1978). The 80's were a blur to me after 1984--starting a new career in Alaska and didn't really follow NU real close. In the 90's the FSU game was huge even though we lost, I felt we played well enough to win and showed that after 5 or 6 years we could play again with the top teams. The 94 OB against Miami--we finally won the big one against an old nemesis on their home turf. I think this was a major turning point in our program. In-person memories included many OU games in the 70's--leaving at half time because of the cold weather and score; the '78 MU game where Wilder and Berns ran wild although it was a total bummer. Back to back bowl games--the 1984 OB where we came so close, and the total idiocy of the Miami fans and officials. The 1985 Sugar Bowl against LSU, where the fans I met showed total class and made the whole trip enjoyable (winning of course helped). For some reason this year's senior game against KSU where a choked up "ep" watched the seniors hug each other after yet another great win.
Favorite NU athletes: Rich Glover, Bobby Thomas, Mike Rozier, Turner Gill, Tommie Frazier, Mike Brown, Steve Damkroger (fellow classmate in HS), Neil Smith
P.S. - Favorite NU non-football athlete - Jack Moore. Most under-rated bb player ever at NU IMO. I never thought a 5-9 player could take over and dominate games but he came about as close as anyone could.
What being a Husker means to me: It means memories back in the 70's of going to about half the games each year with my mom (she got comp tickets where she worked)- sitting through bitter cold games (usually OU). Staying till the last second in blow outs to watch the 4th and 5th teamers playing. Going downtown after the games and watching all the mayhem. I swear the goal posts were drug around the downtown after one game, though my memory may be failing. Playing football with friends and trying to run Husker pass plays (B. Thomas and C. Malito were the big names we tried to emulate). |
