I spent most of my childhood in Omaha and attended Bryan High School. My family moved to Hawaii at the start of my senior year in High School, and I ended up graduating from high school in Hawaii in 1979. I didn't have the good sense to return to Nebraska to attend the University of Nebraska, and instead graduated rom the University of Hawaii. I have been happily married for 16 years and have two boys.
I have been an office on active duty in the Army since 1984. Like most people in the military, I have been stationed all around the world. The Army has taken me to places as far away from Nebraska as Panama, Germany, and Japan. I have been amazed at being able to find Husker fans all over the world. I even saw someone wearing a Husker T-shirt at the airport in Tokyo, Japan. The closest I've been assigned to home was my first assignment at For Tiley, Kansas. I am currently assigned back in Hawaii. I have enjoyed watching the local high school football in Hawaii, and have especially enjoyed watching some of the folks currently on the Husker roster (Raiola, Fonoti, and Tata). In the Army, all assignments are temporary, and this summer I move to Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
I have several "most memorable" husker moments. The most memorable live moment was watching Nebraska play the University of Hawaii in Aloha Stadium in 1982. The Huskers came close to being upset by the Dick Tomey led Rainbow Warriors, but sealed the victory in the 4th quarter. My dad took me to one or two Husker games a year when I was growing up in Nebraska. However, I don't remember the crowds at Lincoln being as loud and wild as the crowd was that night at Aloha Stadium. I think my most memorable Husker moment of all time was watching the Huskers spank the Florida Gators on TV for the National Championship in 1995. I must admit to shedding some tears of joy over this big win, as well as the championship wins against Miami and Tennessee.
The Huskers mean a great deal to me. Most of all, it's a connection to my roots in Nebraska. Being in the military obviously takes me away from my "homeland." However, during every Husker game on TV or on the internet, I envision myself being back home in Nebraska in that Sea of Red. |
