Real Name: Nitin Gambhir Age: 22 Education: Presently a student at Creighton University Hometown: Omaha, Nebraska E-mail: [email protected]
Favorite Husker: Tom Osborne
Favorite Husker moment: Being at the 1995 Orange Bowl when Terry Conn Sacked Frank Costa. Hearing the air go out of the Miami fans' sails was the most gratifying victory ever for me because of the hostility Miami fans showed towards visitors.
Favorite Husker moment II: 1997 Miracle at Missouri. My friends and I chose to make the 5 hour journey to Columbia back in about July when we ordered our tickets. I still hvae that ticket stub. I remember sitting in the endzone opposit of "the catch", and watching the ssprinklers go off at the end of the game. When we were sitting (we were actually at about ? yard line) all the Missouri fans had come down ready to raid the field taunting us. Then, the play. I remember seeing the back of Frost, and the ball going in the endzone. Then all hell broke loose and we had no idea what had happened, other then the clock expiring.
I remember all of us Husker fans, just frozen and then seeing the ref walk over to about the 20 and his hands in the air and the P.A. announcer said "Touchdown Nebraska." I remember screaming my lungs out and just going crazy. Nebraska fans were hugging and I even kissed my bald friend's head. Wyhen we sacked Corby at the end of the game, all of us Husker fans raided the field, taking grass, knowiing, that we had just witnessed one of the greatest college football games ever. If you remember that game, it was close throughout. 7-0 MO., 7-7, 14-7, 14-14, 17-14 MO., 21-17 NU, 24-21MO. , Half, 28-24 NU, 31-28 MO., 31-31, 38-31 MO., 38-38, 45-38 NU Final.
Favorite Husker moment III: After the 1998 ORange Bowl, we were walking outside Pro Player and there was a group of Husker fans tailgating . These were guys we had neve rmet before. They started talking to us and offered us beverages and hot dogs. The party was about at the end and the guys decided they wanted the "welcome to the Orange Bowl" sign, that was draped over the entrance to Pro Player. I rmember all these Husker fans hanging on the sign, that the guard told us was a fine to take. Then, this new camaro pulled up and a guy stepped out and showed his badge. We were out of there like a bat out of hell. It was Don Johnson, I swear. After that we drove back to Orlando, where we were staying and I remember listening to the radio when they announced, that they Huskers had won the Coache's poll. We stopped at Denny's and called back to Omaha. We cound out that the town was going crazy and that one of our friends was so drunk, that he was left at 72nd and Dodge.(Why people all gather at 72nd is beyond me) It was great. We left to come back to Omaha a couple of days later.
It was 75 degrees when we left and 5 degrees when we arrived. Not a fair trade.
What the Huskers mean to me: The Huskers mean everything to me. I take it personally when they are insulted. I go to games every year, but love to attend road games more then anything. The road games are the ones where the team needs you. To see the team come over and give you a hll yeah after the game is such a rush. I'll never forget the Peters, Wistrom, Brown, Warren, etc. for coming over and raising hell after every win we go on the road.
It's also a sense of pride. It is ours, it is all we have. We don't have 4-5 pro teams or the "big" town. We have Lincoln, Nebraska, with 77,000 people raising hell every time they "Blackshirts" walk off the field. There is No bigger rush then watcyhing the "Blackshirts" take care of business.
Also, it is that sense of us being on a mission every year. It is part of being rock solid. It is a proggram that really inspires you to be the best you can be. I have had many interactions with those within the program andI have never had anything but good experiences. I remember after the Missouri game, that we won 45-38 and seeing Charlie McBride after the game and siad "great game coach", and the he said something to the effect of "I dont' think we played a hell of a game, but we sure put on a great show." I mean after what that guy went through that game, to see him able to crack a joke was great.
I love the togetherness that all Husker fans show when on the road. I love going to the games and hitting the bars or restaurants afterwards just to see them filled with Husker fans. It is a sense of community and makes you really loyal to taht team. The names change every year, but uniformans and the fans don't. |
