Short Answer Questions (Answer 2 of the following questions. 30 points each.)

 

  1. What are the requirements of a tragedy according to Aristotle?
  2. Summarize the plot of Oedipus or The Misanthrope in terms of exposition, rising action, climax, and falling action.
  3. What are the qualities of a tragic hero?
  4. What are the key differences between comedy and tragedy?

 

Essay Questions (Answer 1 of the following questions. 60 points each.)

 

  1. Compare Oedipus and Hamlet in terms of the unities of time, place, and action.
  2. Summarize the plot of Oedipus, Hamlet or The Misanthrope in terms of exposition, rising action, climax, and falling action.
  3. Compare Oedipus and Hamlet as tragic heroes.

 

Extra Credit (10 points)

 

  1. Read the commentary Alceste’s Love for Celimene by Lionel Gossman on page 549.  Do you agree or disagree. Cite examples from the play to support your opinion.
