The Calm before the storm


Now I felt obligated to put this picture in to dissipate any worries I might have caused. So I took this picture of the Deschutes River as it meanders through the rocky hills just east of Maupin, Oregon. The run we took is about 6.5 miles long and drops only about 200 feet or so (I think). Here the river is 75 feet wide, the water is deep and the current a manageable 4 knots or so (a good jogging pace). BORING... But further down from here when the water isn't deep, only 40 feet wide, and the roar of the water can be deafening, now that is

WHITE-KNUCKLED WHITEWATER RAFTING!!
