Modern Dance

In the early twentieth century, dancers started to create a dance
style who rebelled against the strict rules of classical ballet.
The first well-known dancers to break away from ballet were the two
American dancers Isadora Duncan and Ruth St. Denis. Their styles
differed, but they were both the start of a new era in the dance
history; the American modern dance movement.

Martha Graham

Martha Graham was born in 1894. She started her dance training
in Los Angeles at the Denishawn School under training of Ruth St.
Denis and Ted Shawn. When Martha Graham came to New York in
1926, she had developed a revolutionary dance style. This style was
meant to provide insight into the human condition. Martha Graham
died in 1991, but her dance style is still taught all over the world.
