| When we look at gain what are our criteria for judgement? Should a factory contribute acid rain in the USA, and so damage Canada or, in the case of the UK, damage Sweded? Should there be a global ecological view of benefit? If you sell technology to Taiwan and, as a result, the products produced undercut those made in the UK and so throw people out of work, is that allowable? The usual answer is that if you do not supply the technology, someone else will: the result will be the same except you and your workers will go out of business in addition. Is protectionism allowable to protect certain workers and at the same time impose poorer-quality goods at a higher price on their citizens? (p.235) |
