by William K. Everson
Citadel Press
Reference book: Table of contents
In this volume, William K. Everson has provided a profusely illustrated appreciation of the detective in film. The photographs alone, chronicling the detective in film from the silent film up to the present (of 1972) are worth the price of acquisition. Its only flaw is its too brief, and tries to cover too much ground. It should have been two volumes.
1. Introduction
2. The Master (the movies of Sherlock Holmes)
3. The Silent Period
4. Three Classics (Green For Danger, The Maltese Falcon, The Kennel Murder Case)
5. The Early Talkies
6. Bulldog Drummond
7. The Oriental Detectives
8. The Private Eyes 1. The Gentlemen
9. The FBI and the Law
10. The British
11. The Detective and Alfred Hitchcock
12. Comedy and Camp
13. The Private Eyes 2. Marlowe to Klute
