Growing up, as a teenager can be very demanding and difficult at the same time, especially when one is growing up is a hard neighborhood. In the dramatic play, "Hey Little Walter" written by Carla Debbie Alleyne, Carla is remarkably able to capture the exact emotion and feeling that a teenager would be going through. With an outstanding performance of great acting done in the Gokturk Theater, this play is a definite must see of the year. With all the great thing that come out of this play nothing is more astonishing than that is was written by a high school student, so one who was able to capture real life experiences and bring them in front of our eyes.
This dramatic play starts off much differently than any other play, with an end commentary of the main character, which leaves the audience in great question of what he is talking about. The play follows with the main character Walter and his best friend Rakim talking, Rakim is try to persuade Walter to start selling drugs with him. At first Walter follows his instincts and say no to his offer. But as the play progresses things for Walter start to slowly fall apart and he find that he needs money. His girlfriend dumps him because he does not have money and he is not treating her well and he finds that he mother is lacking on paying her bills for the house. Walter decision to change his mind on Rakim’s offer changes everyone life forever. Throughout the play Walter life does not only change greatly but so does his little brother. His little brother is greatly affected and tempted to follow in his brother footsteps. Fatal decisions are made and each family member is transformed into different character by the end of the play, with fatal decisions made this play will defiantly leave a message imprinted in your mid for a long time.
The best scene depicted in this play was without doubt the last scene. With what has happened in the play we see also what has happened with Walter’s little brother. This is a great performance by Shane Haffer as Walter little brother, we see exactly what Walter decision has done to his family. His little brother, Albert, starts dealing as well just because he is driven by something stupid and he sees his brother doing it so he wants to be just like his brother. With Albert as the only left on stage and the one spotlight focused on Albert what he does affects the audience as a whole. With him ending the play by counting he drug money shows us how much he has become and will become. Albert counts up to 2,000 dollars as the spotlight slowly dims out. And we know Albert is doomed to the same life as his brother was.
With its dramatic story lien and excellent performance by outstanding actors, "Hey little Walter" is a must see of the year. Once you see it you will walk out of there as a different person with a different view on the teenage life. I would recommend this play to a person with a teenage child or to a person that just wants to go to a good play. Because the fact that this play was written by a high school student will blow you away and it will sow you exactly what a teenage goes through in his/her life and how some decisions are crucial and others fatal.
