Character Sketch: Ralph

Hello I am Ralph, a twelve-year-old boy. I have been stranded on an island with a group of other boys. I am athletic, charismatic protagonist. I was elected the leader of the boys at the beginning of the novel, and I am the primary representative of order, civilization, and productive leadership. My voice is very gentle, not raspy and I listen to everyone. While most of the other boys are concerned with playing, having fun, and avoiding work at the beginning of the novel, I set out to build huts and think of ways to maximize our chances of being saved. However, as the book progresses and the group takes on to savage instincts, I am in a position that declines sharply as Jack's status rises. Eventually, all the boys except Piggy leave my group for Jack's, and it ends up that I am the only one left to be hunted by Jack's tribe and I never seriously consider joining Jack's tribe in order to save myself in anyway whatsoever.

My commitments to civilization are very strong, and my main wish is to be rescued and returned to the place of adults that I came from. At the end of the novel I understand, as Simon did, that savagery exists within all the boys, but I am also determined not to let it overwhelm myself.

For much of the novel, I am unable to understand why the other boys would give in to their instincts of their lust for blood and barbarism. The sight of the hunters chanting and dancing is bewildering to me and is distasteful at the same time. But when I too hunt a boar for the first time, I experience the exhilaration and thrill of bloodlust and violence, and when I go to Jack's feast, I am swept away by the frenzy, dancing on the edge of the group and participation in the killing of Simon. My direct knowledge of the evil that exists within me, as within all human beings, is tragic for me to understand, and it plunges me into misery for several chapters. But this knowledge also enables me to take down the Lord of the Flies at the end of the novel. My story ends somewhat-tragically; although I am rescued and returned to civilization, when I see the naval officer, I weep with the burden of my knowledge of how humanity can really be.
