Kindred Souls

Mermaid of the Aegean sea
Thou hast for eons in warm waters
Bathed your dual physicality
And charmed many intrepid divers
Amidst age-old sunken treasures
From Greece's glorious past
Where goddesses' earthly pleasures
Are in golden ivy-clad letters cast!

All these years have I sought thee
In life's seasons hot and cold
Dreaming of a land of love and revelry
Where the meek may for once be hold
And the suffering heart cease crying
But in vain did I in the night seek
To bring to the parched breast a Spring
That would enliven the sky so bleak.

Restless too thou art in blood and spirit
In thy unquenchable thirst for new stars
Like a timeless oracle anciently lit
Thou speakst of Argos, of Delos and of Wars
And I a lost soul in a lost world I hearken
With eyes closed lest I be turned into stone
By Medusa's eyes and there and then
Miss all thy gods' glory and forever bemoan!

Greece , thy beloved land, supreme abode
Of immortal gods and mountains eternally
Blest where once man life's heavy load
Was made lighter by Art's infinite Poesy
Has for countless moons shone upon my soul
With inspiration's uplifting civilizing light
Daring me to see beyond the eye of the mole
And let my imagination take untrammell'd flight.

All the years of our lives, without knowing it
We were swimming towards each other.
Unbeknownst to us Fate had in the night lit
A fllame that for years would not flicker
But under the good auspices of Poseidon
Grow into a sun most pleasing to Phoebus.
It matters not what has been lost or won:
Apollo from eternity's temple smiles at us
