Chess Tournament #2

Spring Lake District Library

123 East Exchange Street

Spring Lake, Michigan 49456

(616) 846-5770

www.sllib.org

Eligibility: Open to players of all ages and abilities

Registration Location: Register in person at the Spring Lake District Library.  Summer hours are 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday.  No registrations by telephone, fax, mail, or e-mail will be accepted.

Registration Deadline: Saturday, July 17, or until 60 players have registered, whichever comes first.  (Players may also register from 10:00 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. on the day of the tournament.  However, players registering during this time may be able to play in the tournament only if they are needed to complete the number of players in any age group, and they’ll be informed at the end of the regular check-in period if they’ll be able to play.)

No-Shows: Players who register but don’t play all scheduled games in a tournament (i.e., don’t show up for the tournament, arrive late, or leave early) will be ineligible to participate in future tournaments.  So, after registering, if you find you’ll be unable to play, be considerate of other players and phone the library with your notice of withdrawal as soon as possible.

Guests: Your guests are allowed to watch the tournament away from the playing area but must maintain silence during each round.  They’re also welcome to visit the library during the tournament.

Chess Sets: Each player should bring to the tournament an inexpensive chess set identified with his or her name.  The chess board should be at least 10” square and the pieces should be made of wood or plastic, weighted, and of the Staunton (usual) design.  Although only half this number of chess sets will be needed, those sets best suited to the tournament will be used.

Chess Clocks: Chess clocks will be provided for those matches in which both players want to use a clock.

Pairings: Up to five competitive divisions will be established based upon the ages and number of players registering, not upon any established player rating.

Matches: Each player will play five games (lasting a maximum of thirty minutes per game), with a 15 minute break between each round, except after round 2, when there will be a 45 minute lunch break.

Tournament Schedule:

10:00 a.m.–10:15 a.m.: Late registrations

10:00 a.m.– 11:00 a.m.: Players who registered by the deadline should check in and set up their chess boards.

11:00 a.m.: Players who registered late are informed if they’ll be able to play in the tournament.

11:30 a.m.: Play begins with round 1, followed by round 2 at 12:15 p.m.

12:45 p.m.: Lunch break (Bring your own lunch to eat at the library.  Panera Bread will provide bagels and cream cheese.  The library will provide punch.  Coffee and pop machines are available in the library.)

1:30 p.m.: Play resumes with round 3, followed by round 4 at 2:15 p.m. and round 5 at 3:00 p.m.

4:00 p.m.: Awards ceremony

Certificates: Each player (except late registrations) will receive a personalized certificate of participation.  On Wednesday, July 28, the top three winners in each division can pick up at the library a personalized award certificate—the Golden, Silver, and Bronze Knight Awards.
