Tournament #1 at Bedford Junior High School

Bedford Junior High School Chess Club vs. St. Joseph-Sylvania Chess Club

Monday, February 24, 2003

Bedford Junior High School Media Center

8405 Jackman Road, Temperance, Michigan, 734-850-6200

Each player will play three games (lasting a maximum of twenty-five minutes per game) according to the following flexible schedule.  If all games end early, the next round will start earlier.  Players who register for the tournament, but do not come, forfeit their games, thereby penalizing their team.
2:30 – Pizza for the Bedford Junior High School Chess Club
3:15 – St. Joseph-Sylvania Chess Club arrives.
3:20 – Put on your name tag  and set up your chess board at the table assigned to you.
3:30 – Play your first game against your assigned opponent.
4:00 – Play your second game against your assigned opponent.
4:30 – Play your third game against your assigned opponent.
5:00 – Presentation of the Knight’s Trophy to the winning team (This will be a traveling trophy, with the winning chess club keeping the trophy after each tournament between the two clubs.)

Each player should do the following:

·        Bring to the tournament an inexpensive chess set identified with the student’s name.

·        Maintain silence during the chess matches, except to announce check or checkmate.

·        Remember that once you touch a piece, you must move that piece, if you can legally do so.

·        Be courteous to other players at all times.

·        When each game is finished, set up the chess board for the next game, inform the tournament director who won the game, and leave the media center until everyone has finished playing the round.  If a game is not finished in twenty-five minutes, the winner is the player with remaining pieces having the most value, as follows: Queen – 9 points, Rook – 5 points, Bishop – 3 points, Knight – 3 points, and Pawn – 1 point.

Parents are welcome to attend the presentation ceremony.  However only players and adults administering the chess tournament will be allowed in the media center during the tournament itself.
