INSTRUCTIONS  FOR PARENTS

Objectives

The objectives of B.L.A.K.E. 2002 are (1) to encourage your children to experiment with art and writing and (2) to provide an opportunity for them to showcase their best artistic and literary work and to learn from what other artists and writers have done.  While you’re are at the museum, be sure to visit some of the numerous galleries.  For a preview of what the museum has to offer, visit its website at http://www.toledomuseum.org/home.html.

The acronym for the art and literary fair (B.L.A.K.E.) refers to William Blake (1757-1827), the English Romantic poet, painter, engraver, and printer.  There are numerous websites dedicated to his work, including “The William Blake Archive” at  http://www.blakearchive.org/main.html.  The fair’s tiger logo, which incorporates the poet’s name, is suggested by his poem “The Tyger,” which begins:

Tyger Tyger. burning bright,

In the forests of the night:

What immortal hand or eye,

Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

Procedure

Note that you have three time periods during which you can set up your exhibits and two time periods during which you can remove them.  Please arrive at the museum in time to complete your setup and removal during the designated time.

You will be responsible for setting up your own  exhibits under the direction of the museum staff.

No entries will be insured against loss or damage while in the museum.

There will be no judging of exhibits.

Works of art consisting of perishable materials, living organisms, untreated wood, or liquid in breakable containers will not be accepted.  Ceramics must be fired, and textiles must be ready to hang.  Only original artwork will be accepted; no kits or pre-made, manufactured items may be submitted.

All work should be recent, preferably having been completed since September, 2001.  The maximum number of entries each student may exhibit is twelve.  If the number of lines on the family entry form is not enough to list all your children’s entries, please list the additional entries on the back of the form or on another copy of the form.

Since all artwork on paper, such as paintings and drawings, will be hung, you should bring it to the museum ready to hang.  Ideally, it should be mounted, matted, and framed.  Pieces that are mounted but not framed will be attached to the wall using L nails rather than propped.  Pieces that are neither framed nor mounted will be stapled to the display wall.

Non-hanging works, such as literary works and sculpture, will be displayed on pedestals or tables with transparent lids.  Students may request that the lids be removed if and when they are at their exhibits during all or part of the public viewing period.

When you arrive at the museum to register, your family will be given any commemorative tote bags that you may have ordered on the family entry form.  You will also be given an envelope containing identifying labels that are to be placed with your children’s entries.  These labels will have been prepared from information that you provided on the family entry form—the student’s name, grade level, title of entry, and type of entry.  Use the following code numbers to complete the “Type of Entry” column:

1.                Picture book

2.                Poetry – illustrated

3.                Poetry – not illustrated

4.                Short story – illustrated
