Ah, That New Car Smell

*** A faded red 1991 Toyota Tercel pulls into the parking lot of a Mazda dealership. It rattles over bumps and sputters from its exhaust as it comes to a stop in a parking space out front. The driver's door opens, and Adrian Caine gets out. He's wearing a hooded Etnies sweatshirt, faded Old Navy jeans, and navy blue Vans sneakers. As he closes the door of his car, his cell phone rings. He pulls it out of the pocket on the front of his hoodie, and answers the call ***

Adrian Caine - Hello? ... Oh, hi Mom. ... Yeah. ... I told you, Mom, I got the call up to the big show! ... Yeah, I told you. The whole reason I was in the developmental system was to polish up my game and get me ready for TV. ... I told you I wasn't being put on the back burner!

*** Adrian chuckles at his mother's paranoia about his chosen career ***

Adrian Caine - Yeah, I got a pretty good signing bonus. ... $20,000. ... Yeah! I'm at the Mazda dealership right now, I'm finally getting a new car! ... Brand new!!! ... Yeah. ... Well, I thought about putting it away and saving it, but I decided not to. ... Because I can get by just fine, except my car breaks down once a week. ... I don't need groceries. ... I don't need rent money. ... No, I don't need any extra money. The money I make now is enough, plus I'll be getting more once I make my TV debut. ... Mom, I've made up my mind, and I'm getting this car. I'll be alright. ... I'm gonna' get going, Mom, I'll talk to you later. ... Okay, g'bye.

*** Adrian turns off his cell phone and slips it back into his pocket. He walks into the
dealership, and up to Bob Vanderbeck, the man he's been talking to over the phone for the
past three weeks ***

Bob Vanderbeck - Hi there, Adrian!

Adrian Caine - Hi, Bob! You got that car for me??

Bob Vanderbeck - Yep, just came in this morning! The guys out back just finished washing and detailing it, we've got your 20-day plates put on, and I've got the keys right here!

*** Bob hands Adrian the keys to his new 2003 MazdaSpeed Protege. Adrian looks down at them in his hand, and smiles ***

Bob Vanderbeck - Let's go get you into your car, shall we?

Adrian Caine - By all means!

*** They walk out the double glass doors in the front of the dealership, and around to the side. There, gleaming in the sunlight, is his Spicy Orange Protege. Full options package, turbocharged, 18" Racing Hart alloys, the works. Adrian turns to Bob and shakes his hand ***

Adrian Caine - Thanks, Bob. Here's the keys to the Tercel.

*** Adrian hands over the keys to his old Toyota, which he got a standard
$1,000 trade in for ***

Bob Vanderbeck - Thanks Adrian. You have yourself a great time in that car! It's one hell of a ride!!!

Adrian Caine - Thanks, I'm sure I will! Bye!!!

*** Adrian gets into his car, and starts it up. He sits for a moment, taking in the interior. He inhales, filling his lungs with that "new car smell". He breathes out, and smiles again. His first taste of stardom. But this is just the beginning. He has to go home and pack, because this Friday...he hits the road with the EWA. His foot pushes down hard on the accelerator pedal, and the car responds by shooting him out of the parking lot and onto the road. He shifts down from 3rd to 2nd, the turbo's blow off valve hisses angrily, and he races away down the road ***
