Daily Notes on Poetry & Related Matters

16 August 2005: Okay, so far my research into the question of what poetry is has yielded the following two statements:

1. Poetry is a kind of literary composition that provides certain worthwhile human experiences at a higher level of emotional intensity than anything else can.

2. Poetry carries out its function by means of poetic content and poetic form.

Next, it would seem, I need to define poetic content. For me, it consists of just two elements: techniphemes (or poetic techniques) and "denotatiphemes." Poetic form is simply the arrangement in a poem of its content. I don't believe I've become controversial yet (except terminologically--and, I suppose, in considering poetic content and form different in kind), but who knows?

Techniphemes and denotatiphemes, it should be noted, are not used only in poetry; the former are simply used significantly more in poetry than in any other form of literary composition. They consist of equaphemes, repenemes, enhanciphemes and flow-breaks. Definition of these will have to wait until tomorrow.

Denotatiphemes are words that do nothing or little but denote subject matter--which can be narrative, ideational, scenic, or whatever has always been consider subject matter in literature.

Poetic form is simply the shape of a poem, or what a text can be abstractly described as once it has been judged a poem, which (I will eventually argue) depends entirely upon its techniphemes.
