3 February 2005: Hmmm, the person who e.mailed me that most poeple wouldn't attribute to Karl Kempton's poem what I did wrote me again. He said he intended "to compliment (me) not criticize." He added that I was right not to care what most people think. Yes, I can see that what he said could have been praise for my being able to find so much, legitimately, in the poem--though he might have used the verb, "discover," rather than "attribute" since the latter seems more like I'm adding to the poem rather than locating something already there. To be picky. But I'm pleased that I took my correspondent wrong.
In real life, I almost always take others to be friendly. Even when they call the most horrideous names, I take them to be joshing. Good social skill, I think. But I have to say I tend to assume that anyone saying anything in print that can be taken as negative about my poetry or comments on poetry is an Enemy. I'm too quick on the draw. Not that I don't get slammed all the danged time.
Well, I thank the e-mailer again. Once more, he's set-up an entry for me!
