Daily Notes on Poetry

20 November 2004. Today, I was going to do a Poem poem. I started it yesterday, but only got two lines done, then. This, in spite of what still seems to me an excellently exploitable beginning idea. So I gave up and went to other things, among them the new "division into poetry" piece below:

Once again, I'm not sure what I'm doing make sense. My original intention was to do a variation on my division of "poetry" by "beauty." Its sub-dividend product is an empty rectangle, its remainder, "ripples." I thought the personification of Beauty would add a touch of Sensuality to the rectangle, and leave less of a remainder. In tinkering with this idea, though, I couldn't get my touch of Sensuality as--well, pretty--as I wanted. I worked on it away from the empty rectangle, trying pieces of what I came up with in the square. Finally, I accidentally left a solid blue rectangle on top of my tinkered design when I took a piece of the design away to try inside the subdividend product. For some reason, I really liked it, and liked it even better when I accidentally covered part of it with white. My impression is that something outside my poem is contributing to it. That seems very interesting to me, but I don't feel I have any kind of handle on it. I very much like the look of what I have but can't figure out a rationale for it, or how to persuade anyone that everything in the poem belongs there for more than decorative reasons. No matter. I like what I done did.
