Daily Notes on Poetry

31 May 2004. I have some sympathy with the many poets I know who believe a poem should stand absolutely alone, uncontaminated with anything about the poet it came from--no bio, no photograph, no personal statement of artistic intentions. But I think of cut flowers in a glass vase versus the same flowers when just pulled from the garden, clumps of dirt breaking loose from their roots.
