27 May 2004. I'll be away on a trip the next four days, so probably will not post entries here till I get back. Today's entry will be a short one on the local Arts & Humanities Council. Twice this year I've had work in exhibits of poetry at the council's headquarters. Both of them were more or less for anyone in the local writers' center I'm a member of who was willing to participate. The second of these ended Tuesday. When I dropped by to pick up my two works in that show, one of the ladies in charge told me she'd been trying to get hold of me because of an upcoming exhibit they wanted my work for--the two in the show that had just ended and one more, if I had one. A pleasant surprise, to say the least. The nicest thing about it was that the lady went on to say that now that she'd been exposed to my work for a while, she was beginning to understand what I was trying to do.
I've always liked the people involved with the council, but not at all liked the kind of government operation it's always been. Most of its money goes to the equivalent of PBS--such as the "non-profit" municipal auditorium our county has. Which means that entertainers like Debbie Reynolds get most of it. Arts educators get what's left over, not artists. On the other hand, I'm after exposure, so I agreed to have my three works in the show. Now I have to write a bio for them that includes a brief explanation of my mathemaku. (Hey, that will give me something to post tomorrow, just before I leave on my trip!)
