Daily Notes on Poetry

27 April 2004. I'm really going to goof off today: I'm just presenting a slight updating of my list of ingredients that a poet might want in a poem. I have many more to add, I suspect:

1. freshness of technique

2. clarity of language

3. an important moral message

4. sincerity

5. melodiousness of language

6. archetypal significance

7. a theme almost everyone can identify with (i.e., universality)

8. Psychological insightfulness

9. largeness of scene (or vision)

10. apparent craftlessness

11. unabashed artfulness

12. complexity

13. narrative interest

14. cleverness
