The 1998 CJRL Auction Draft was held at Rova Farms Bar and Restaurant in Jackson, New Jersey. For the previous 8 seasons, the draft was held at Art and Kathy Johnson's house, but with expansion and multi-owner teams, it just wasn't big enough any longer. Art and Kathy's living room has been declared by the CJRL Board of Trustees to be an official historic site.
The new venue was great. Everyone had room to spread out, organize their piles of stats and cheat sheets, and even have a spot for food and drinks. However, the owners kicked us out at 11:00 p.m. Against our better judgement, we desecrated the historic site at Art and Kathys, and the draft ended finally at 1:30 a.m.
Here we have the Terminators eavesdropping on the Super Kings strategy. "Maybe we can bring up Chico Walker's name for a quarter. I hope nobody bids us up." The Cassville Crew is pondering whether or not he can sit on Roger Cedeno until the end of the draft and get him for a quarter. The Razmataz are already hard at work thinking of a way to trade Gary Sheffield's hefty contract. To the far right we have a young Devil Dog, wondering "Why did I let my dad talk me into being the auctioneer?"
Uhm...now we know why the Devil Dogs always seemed to be in a bidding war with the DNTs! He was checking out her top secret notes. He must not be aware of the DNTs strict secrecy protocol--she can tell you the information, but then she has to kill you.
The No-Names are looking for someone to put one bid in for. As it is written in CJRL law, the No-Names always have to put in at least one bid.
The Peacekeepers just told the Ladykillers that he bid on veteran stand-up comedian Slappy White instead of Rondell White. Not that Bob minds, as he just loves comedy, but he is getting a kick out of the Peacekeepers mistakenly bidding on Greg Zaun instead of Greg Vaughn. Aaahhh--the league that laughs together . . ., well, you get the drift.
"Hey--wait a minute. I thought I was bidding on Jose Valentin. Who is Fernando Vina anyway?". Lets not forget--the Super Kings were CJRL champions just two years ago.
Always be suspicious of expansion teams with laptop computers. Here the Razmataz are plotting the demise of the 1997 CJRL champion DNTs. The only question is--will Chris Stynes get along with Gary Sheffield in the Razmataz outfield? The world may never know.
The Cassville Crew is measuring the league trophy, seeing if it will fit into his car after next year's auction draft. "Jeff Kent for $6.00." That is a good start. An expansion team in the CJRL's third year, the Crew seem ready for a big push to the top.
