LEE DIXON

writing in BFC programme vs. Lincoln City, 25/08/90

Lee Dixon as a first-year apprentice, with Martin Dobson

I feel honoured to be featured in the first Burnley FC programme of the new season - especially as I did not feature too often as a Burnley player!

Without going into too much detail about my playing career since leaving Turf Moor, I can say that my saddest day in professional football was the day when John Bond released me from Burnley. I can honestly tell you that it was a pleasure to be associated with such a great and well respected football club.

Up until the appointment of John Bond, I had been making steady progress through the ranks at Turf Moor and had just, in fact, made my first-team debut. But it was not to be. And, though I was devastated to leave Burnley, it was probably a blessing in disguise as it spurred me on to reach my goal of making it as a professional footballer.

I owe a great deal to the coaching staff at Burnley and will never forget the help and encouragement they gave me - especially people like Arthur Bellamy, Ray Pointer, Frank Casper and, of course, Brian Miller.

As those of you who follow the game will probably know, I have played for a number of clubs since leaving Burnley and look for all their results on match days - but the first result I look for is the Clarets', after all they started me on the road to becoming a professional footballer. For that I will always be grateful.

Like anyone else with connections, either past or present, with Burnley, I wish them well for the new season and hope it provides them with the launching pad for future success.
