General Manager of the Smart Alecs
As we approach the All-Star Break, it appears the EMOO league is a four pony race, with the Alecs completing its rebuilding of an 8th or 9th place club at the start of the 1996 season and assuming first place for the moment. Close behind are the Suns, rebuilding while they continue to win, and perennial powers the Ruxpins and the Mooners. The Mudhens are coming on while the Laze appear to be slumping. The Mudhens are anticipating the returns of Paul Wagner and Mike Grace. The Flyers and the Xpress knew coming in that they would be rebuilding and that has been the case. The Mooners are probably right where they should be at this point. The pitching is solid if not, spectacular. Offensively, though, the OF has been spotty and the IF, with the exception of 529 ft. tall Andres Gallaraga and Mike Lansing has done little. Yet the team has remained in the upper half of most offensive categories through the use of mirrors and smoke. Those "Lansing to the Yanks" trade rumors have quieted for the moment. But where theres a Steinbrenner, theres a way. The Thunder has gotten good pitching. Terry Mulholland has been a steal so far at 2 cents, while Kevin Brown threw the majors first no-no of 97. By Eric Karros own admission, he has stunk up the joint. Has the fat new contract added extra pressure? The Flyers are ringing the phone lines and the Xpress has been quite successful in turning over its roster. The Nightmares star players have not been able to carry the full burden being caused by spotty pitching and a weak middle infield. As the teams total salary continues to rise with the acquisition of Lofton, the caliber of play remains consistent. The raise given to Caminiti has been being spent from the DL for stretches of the season thus far. Let it never be forgotten that chemistry, a strong minor league organization and a stable front office are usually a superior match to unbridled spending. Ask King George .
Without naming specific names, the Swami must say that he very much likes the looks of the Scottnel Suns. This is a team to reckoned with, if not in 97, then shortly down the road. Ease on down, ease on down
With the season about 1/3 over, league records with a chance to be broken: team batting average of .293. Currently the Smart Alecs are stroking it at a .301 pace. The Thunder, with 89 SB is on pace to challenge the record of 237. The RBI record of 982 will be tough to best but the Alecs, with 341 have a shot. The Laze are in the running for the saves record of 92. The Mooners are .06 off the ERA standard while the Suns are only.022 off the CR record. At this point, it appears all of the all-time lows are safe .
