As its All-Star time, I found myself sitting around creating some lists of my own. By no means are these foolproof. Arguments could be made for numerous other players. However, here are a few All-Star Rosters of my own:
97 ROTO ALL-STAR TEAM
P P. Martinez, S. Estes, G. Maddux, D. Kile, K. Brown, B. Jones, M. Wohlers, B. Wagner, R. Beck
C M. Piazza, T. Hundley
1B J. Bagwell
2B C. Biggio
3B C. Jones
SS J. Blauser
MI D. DeShields
CR A. Gallaraga
OF L. Walker, T. Gwynn, R. Lankford, B. Bonds, K. Lofton
U K. Young
97 ROTO UP AND COMERS ALL-STAR TEAM
P B. Tomko, S. Estes, M. Morris, A. Benes, J. Gonzalez, P. Martinez, U. Urbina, T. Adams, B. Wagner
C C. Widger, J. Kendall
1B D. Young
2B T. Womack
3B S. Rolen
SS N. Perez
MI W. Guerrero
CR D. Lee
OF V. Guerrero, A. Jones, J. Guillen, R. White, M. Tucker
U M. Grudzielanek
Players on the above list each has less than 3 or 4 years in the bigs. I tried to keep the cutoff to 2+ years of full tiime duty.
97 KMART ROTO ALL-STAR TEAM
P D. Kile, F. Cordova, T. Mulholland, S. Estes, A. Benes, B. Jones, T. Worrell, J. Shaw, J. Franco
C J. Reed, S. Servais
1B J.T. Snow
2B T. Womack
3B V. Castilla
SS J. Blauser
MI E. Young
CR E. Alfonzo
OF M. Tucker, H. Rodriguez, M. Alou, T. Gwynn, E. Burks
U K. Young
Players on the above list were selected based on a combination of 97 first half statistics and EMOO 97 salaries. This is perhaps not a first place team but would nevertheless be extremely competitive throughout the year.
Finally here is my favorite:
97 ALL-STAR $2.60 TEAM
P Estes 5, Kile 1, Morris 5, Cordova 2, Benes 9, Jones 8, Neagle 11, Shaw 1, Worrell 7
C Hundley 26, Reed 1
1B Galarraga 29
2B Womack 10
3B Jones 20
SS Blauser 8
MI Kent 17
CR Snow 9
OF Walker 38, Gwynn 24, Lankford 21, Guerrero 2, Jones 5
U K. Young 1
The total price tag comes to $2.60. What little this team gives up in saves it gets back in wins, ERA and WHIP.
